    Best Of – Part 2

Welcome to Master in Music the musical podcast where I Petronella Torin tries to resolve the magic behind really great music.

I like to invite you to a little backstage tour in some of my episodes. We will meet five quite different musicians and hear some of their experience with creating fantastic music.

we start the tour with a famous Ulf Wandenbrandt, then we dive into the life of solo Cellist Niels Ullner followed by the singing professor Gun-britt Gustavsson and ending up with three swinging singing Hebbe Sisters.  A sneak-peek into the normally very secretive lives of musician and their way of making music.

Let me introduce Ulf Wadenbrandt, he went from local drum teacher to international rock conductor for The Band ARIA to becoming the Principal guest conductor for the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra. He is known for being an energy explosion on stage and you have never seen a conductor head-banging as he does. Let’s listen to what he has to say about getting a sponsor as a musician.

Now we are going to hear a clip from my personal cello hero Professor and Solo cellist Niels Ullner. He has been a principal cellist for 34 years in Malmö symphony orchestra in Sweden and is known for educating some of the finest cellists at the National academy of Denmark. Now we dive into a part where I try to find out how to win a job in an orchestra and what makes a good team.

We are taking a trip into the deep forest of Sweden to a magical meadow where Singing professor Gunbritt Gustavsson lives. She is a singing lector at the royal academy in Stockholm and a widespread singing profile in Sweden known for her fantastic powerful voice.  We talk on our best Swenglish about the importance of simplicity and being natural and the importance of breathing.

She is one of the most positive, sensitive listeners I ever met and she has the ability to find beauty and expression in every performer. She releases art that is capture so it can grow to its full potential.

Before we dive into the interview in her house talking about her life, singing approach, as a singer her self and as a lector we talk about how she felt like a bad teacher at the beginning of her carrier and how she had to work her way to the top. Going against some of the most profaned norms of singing.

For today's episode, I have a very special guest. The man that taught me all the best things I know about cello playing: Profesor and solo cellist Niels Ullner. He is a Danish music animal that just spreads music in every step of his life. He has been working as a principal cellist since his twenties at Malmö Symphony orchestra. He is a cello professor and chamber music director at the Danish national conservatory in Odense.

Just like the famous tale from the writer H.C. Andersen tells the story about the ugly duckling, Niels has the gift of seeing the inner swan in every person he meets. As a Cello teacher, he can get to know your hidden soul just by listening to your playing, as he slowly peels off the layers of duckling feathers, he awakes a beautiful swan in all of his students.

I have always admired Niels ability to see other people's gift. In this episode you will get to go behind the scenes in the professional orchestra and learn about the unwritten orchestra rules, the does and don’t!

Get a walk down memory lane to some of our times greatest cellist and Niels old teachers like Mstislav Rostropovich, Pierre Fournier, William Pleeth and some secret living locations of our most famous composers.

I am so proud and grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from Niels and I like to give my strongest sincere recommendations to you who is listening to this episode and want to become an orchestra cellist. Niels Ullner is the most incredible teacher with more insight in to winning the jobs, competitions and finding the joy in professional cello playing. He has taught cellists like Jonathan Swensen, Mette Spang Hanssen,
