228: Price Recovery Analysis - How Long Does It Take To Get Back To Even?

228: Price Recovery Analysis - How Long Does It Take To Get Back To Even?

How long does it take a stock to get back to even after a large daily move down? And does the magnitude impact how long it takes the position to recover the loss?

We’ve all been in losing trades and wondered if we should hang on to the position for a little longer or cut it loose. So, to help answer the question, we studied the short-term performance of stocks and ETFs after different daily loss totals.

The study analyzed 324 assets over a 20-year period. We calculated the 5-day returns following single-day losses up to 5%.

227: What 20-Years of Moving Average Data Teaches Us About Stock Reversals & Momentum

Stocks have been described as a rubber band, and we often assume they will snap back and revert when prices become overextended.

So, we wanted to know: How likely is a security to continue or reverse its momentum above and below major moving averages in short, medium, and long-term timeframes? And does the security’s proximity to a moving average impact its performance?

We researched 20 years of data on 286 symbols, using short, mid, and long-term trends to analyze the ticker’s 30-day return relative to its simple moving averages.

I'll be honest, the results surprised me.

An options trader must

Kirk du Plessis is one of those rare breeds of individuals who understand the difference between results and process and why it's the latter that counts over the long run in order to get good results on the former. Realistic, specific and unbelievable value are embedded in these shows. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to get serious about options trading.

Simply the best

I’ve been an active trader for nearly four years. In my third year I discovered this podcast and boy...did it make a difference. Instead of staring frantically at the screen for hours on end- not knowing my a priori probability distribution- I now have a systematic, time efficient, risk defined, and trustworthy approach. I spend less time and generate (bigger) steady returns.

Kirk has a knack for explaining seemingly complex material in an easy to understand, vivid manner. He uses a mix of theory and practical examples that instill the listener with confidence that the approach works.

Perhaps you, the listener, do not want to trade options exclusively. That is fine, but be sure you listen to this podcast and make options a part of your trading toolkit.

All the best,
Ingo

A high quality option education podcast that I am looking for!

I am a big listener of trading related podcast. In the past 12 months, I have listened up all episodes of TopTraderUnplugged, BetterSystemTrader, ChatWithTraders, TradingStories and so on. All the above mentioned podcasts are great sources for general trading ideas and offer tons of great insights. Once I started to get serious about setting myself up for trading, more specialized materials are needed, e.g. trading courses, datafeed, trading platform and strategies. Yes, strategies as opposed to single strategy. Because market does not stay in one state all the time, you need several strategies to trade different market conditions. And the OptionAlpha is the go-to source of inspirations for market neutral option strategy group.
