My Son Was Murdered in Sandy Hook - Scarlett Lewis (part 1 of 2)
The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a mass shooting that occurred on December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut where a shooter shot and killed 28 people. Twenty of the victims were children between six and seven years old, six were adult staff members, the other 2 were the shooter’s mother and the shooter.
One of those six year old kids was Scarlett Lewis’ son Jesse. In the fall of 2022 Scarlett went to court to face Alex Jones, an alt-right radio host and conspiracy theorist, who spread the lie that the mass shooting never took place. Scarlett is the founder of the Choose Love Movement and podcast. This is a two part episode; in part one we discuss the day of the shooting, how Jesse inspired the Choose Love Movement and the work the organization does with schools. In part 2 we discuss what parents can do to help keep their children safe and Scarlett’s time in court with Alex Jones.

Cornwall Alternative School - Bryan Rice and Jay Kayseas
In March I had the pleasure of spending time at Cornwall Alternative School in Regina Saskatchewan. There I met an incredibly passionate and caring staff along with the funny, smart, and charming students. Cornwall Alternative School brings in youth from every corner of the city that are slipping through the cracks in public, Catholic and private schools. Its whole purpose is to support youth with compassion and empathy that would otherwise likely dropout and get lost in the abyss with societies under privileged. These youth deal with things like addiction, trauma, mental illness and poor home lives. The school relies on donations and partial funding from the local government to stay operational. In this episode I speak with the principal, Bryan Rice and school counsellor Jay Kayseas to get a better idea of how the school started, obstacles a school like this runs into, what some of the needs of their students are and the future hopes for the school. Please go to https://www.cornwallalternativeschool.com/ to donate financially or with in kind materials.

MENTAL HEALTH HEADLINE HOT TAKES with Nick and Todd ep21
EP 21: HOT TAKES on a Study Links 40% of Mental Health Conditions to Child Trauma and Black Youth Face Barriers to Mental Health Services
Nick and Todd are back with more mental health news, ready to dissect the headlines and spark your critical thinking.
Nick wants to discuss a new study linking 40% of mental health conditions to child maltreatment. A new study for the University of Sydney reveals that childhood maltreatment accounts for 41% of suicide attempts and 35% of self-harm cases in Australia. Nick and Todd share their reflections and speculate on how to combat child trauma.
Todd shares a new story highlighting the barriers black youth face to receiving mental health services. Many Black youth have experienced trauma, sometimes stemming from racism or discrimination, which can affect their mental health, yet, they face multiple barriers to treatment.
Todd and Nick discuss the role of race and class in a person's options to receive mental health services.

Dwayne was diagnosed with post COVID psychosis, something I had never heard of and something I thought people should know about. Shirley is not just looking for answers but she’s also wanting to inform others of this rare condition. We discuss the speed at which it affected her husband, if it can be treated and if it can get worse. So what is post COVID psychosis and how did it present itself with Dwayne?
