NEW PODCAST: Introducing The Redemption of Jar Jar Binks

NEW PODCAST: Introducing The Redemption of Jar Jar Binks

Jar Jar Binks became one of the most polarizing figures in cinematic history when he made his debut in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace in 1999. He was even named “the most annoying movie character of all time” by Complex Magazine. After the release, Ahmed Best, the man who played Jar Jar, was hit with the full force of the backlash — and it nearly destroyed him. The Redemption of Jar Jar Binks is a six-part journey through the early internet to understand how one of the first-ever online hate campaigns began, and to right what we got so wrong about Jar Jar the first time around. Coming June 28 from the TED Audio Collective. Subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.

How to Be a Better Human

How to Be a Better Human

This is... NOT an episode of Conversations with People Who Hate Me. We're taking a week off, so instead we're sharing an episode of another podcast from the TED Audio Collective called How to Be a Better Human. It's a show hosted by comedian (and good friend of Dylan's) Chris Duffy, about how we can all learn to be a little less terrible. Dylan was interviewed by Chris last year and shares what he’s learned about apologies, forgiveness, and the benefits of taking the time to explore and establish our personal boundaries. If you want to hear more episodes, you can find and follow How to Be a Better Human wherever you're listening to this. And great news—they're hard at work on a new season and will be back weekly in June.

Brave and inspiring

The host does an amazing job of getting people who had a negative encounter, usually online,
to talk together and find common ground. The conversations can’t be easy to enter and the guests also deserve credit for being willing to participate. The episodes I’ve heard so far end with mutual respect and sometimes apologies
I think this podcasts makes the world a better place.

Is this racist?

I love this podcast, it tackles many important topics and conversations that need to be had - typically the conversations are centred around issues that we as loving humans who want to heal the world (or see it burn, wherever you are on the piece of string is irrelevant) need to hear and learn from. Unfortunately, the episode ‘is this racist?’ felt really self serving to me, from Lauren’s point of view. I understand that everyone can feel insecure and being worried that someone hates you is certainly not nice, but the subject matter was centred around her telling someone how bad they made her feel, and then asking why they felt bad (as if they shouldn’t?) when they showed regret for their words... it didn’t feel like a constructive or informative conversation for the masses, which I feel this podcast usually is - it felt more like a conversation where Lauren got to make herself feel better by making someone else feel bad. Again, I love this podcast which is why I’ve rated five stars, but I felt really disheartened to hear this particular conversation (and no, I don’t hate Lauren or you Dylan!)
