There are 3 key things, in my opinion, you need to do before you apply for a mortgage.

1 - Reduce / eliminate consumer debt
This is Credit cards,  Buy now-pay later, Store cards, HP, car loans etc.

2 - Reduce spending
Cut out all unnecessary spending for the 3-6 months before you apply for the loan

3 - Increase your income
The more you can prove you are earning, the higher your loan can be

The tidier your accounts can look, the better off you will be. It doesn't have to be a permanent thing, but you may find it is a better way to start living after all.
