Homelessness funding distribution changes hands in Tehama County, leading to delays
Tehama County is already seeing some homeless services enhanced with state grant money. But the arrival time remains unknown for $14 million the county was awarded unknown. Also, a new sobering center will soon be open in Chico, and the 1078 Gallery is hosting a fundraising event called “Bowls for Gaza” that aims to raise funds for Palestinians in need.

Coin-Op in Chico announced it’s closing this month
Chico’s newest downtown arcade and bar is closing its doors this month after only one year of being in business. Also, officials are warning Shasta County residents of the dangers of fast flowing, cold rivers amidst a scorching heat wave hitting the North State this week, and Pheasant Club is to perform at Argus Bar tonight.

Torres shelter says it housed more people than ever last year
The Torres Community Shelter helped more than 200 unhoused people get into permanent housing in 2023. Also, the Butte County Board of Supervisors OK’d staff to initiate the process of putting a one-cent sales tax on the November ballot, and a new 66-unit housing complex for disabled unhoused residents is moving forward in Chico.

Another week of extreme heat, some North State cities have no cooling centers
The North State is bracing for a second week of temperatures nearing 110 degrees Fahrenheit in some places. A lack of state mandated cooling centers means differing protocols in cities across the region. Also, the city of Chico is looking for a local organization to provide heating and cooling services during extreme weather, and the Plumas County Board of Supervisors will hold a meeting to take public comments on its proposed budget.

Shasta supervisors form panel to review applications for registrar of voters position
The Shasta County Board of Supervisors voted to create a panel to review applicants for its vacant registrar of voters position. Also, Butte County Board of Supervisors are to receive the budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year, and Chico residents will see more road closures this week as the city continues making improvements along the Esplanade.

Shasta County supervisor withheld letter clearing DA of wrongdoing; now his colleagues want to know why
Shasta County Supervisor Patrick Jones withheld a letter from California’s attorney general’s office that cleared the district attorney of misconduct. His colleagues voted this week to investigate whether Jones broke any laws by not sharing the letter. Also, the Chico City Council approved the 2024-25 city budget, and a new report found that only a small percentage of UC and community college students eligible for CalFresh actually receive the benefits. At Chico State, staff hope to reduce the stigma around the program and increase enrollment.
