Last week we began Matthew Chapter 6 about how we are to give, and how God the Father sees all we do in serving and giving to others and rewards us. He sees what we do to serve and give in secret, and He remembers it. Above all, it's important we do everything as unto the Lord, not just to show or gain people's approval. Instead, as we entrust our lives to Him, we can look for ways God blesses us every day. Because His ways are not our ways, we don’t always see His blessing at first.

How are you at keeping secrets? Secrets can often be a bad thing, but this isn’t a secret, but it does require us to trust in God who sees what we do in secret for Him. In the passage we read today there is a big difference between what you do to be seen by God and what we do to be seen by people. You might say it’s similar to the difference of being self-righteous and being declared righteous. This is the very thing Jesus wanted to clarify, that as Christians we don’t have to impress God or people to make ourselves look good. God always looks at the heart and he rewards those who diligently seek Him and honor Him in all we do and also in our giving.

This morning we are going back to Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount and this portion of his sermon Jesus addressed going beyond what was expected or required. How do we react to difficult things in the flesh compared to how we should live by the Spirit? How many of you are competitive? I can get this way myself. Sometimes I wonder if being competitive is a good thing or not. Sure we all like to win and that’s not necessarily a bad desire to have, is it? Where it can go wrong is if we try to win at all costs. But we know we can’t win them all, don’t we?

Today we are going to look at the book of Ruth. This book is primarily written about Ruth, but it is also important to recognize Naomi and the influence she had on Ruth. Naomi made a huge difference in the life of Ruth and her legacy.

How are you doing as far as keeping your promises? How honest have we been to the things you’ve said yes to? In other words, can you be trusted? Surveys tell us men are most likely to lie about impersonal things. Women are most likely to lie about relational things. Statistics show us there is little difference between Christians and non-Christians, as far as our promises are concerned.
