    Violence Against Women in Turkey

    Violence Against Women in Turkey

Before the Covid-19 pandemic, in 2019, it was found that over the course of her lifetime, 1 in 3 women worldwide suffered from violence based on her gender. The situation has only deteriorated since then, as national restrictions associated with the pandemic have unavoidably caused an increase in gender-based violence at home.

In the face of such a high likelihood of experiencing violence, women’s safety is highly dependent on actions taken by governments to prevent violence and protect those at risk. In Turkey, however, authorities are increasingly unresponsive to calls for help, while the judiciary displays tolerance towards perpetrators of violence and the government plans to remove key legal protection against violence.

Nina Keese speaks about specific cases, the Istanbul convention and more.
