S2 | Welcome to Season 2 of The Boy in the Water

From Melanie Reid Investigates comes the brand new season of The Boy in the Water. Listen as we follow the coronial inquest into the death of three-and-a-half year old Lachlan Jones, whose lifeless body was found face up in a sewage oxidation pond in the small town of Gore in January 2019.
We have been covering this case for more than four years now. In Season One we revealed multiple flaws in the police investigation and uncovered new evidence that cast serious doubt about the circumstances surrounding Lachie’s death. Then, in August 2023, the coroner announced he would be holding an inquest into Lachie’s death.
In Season Two, we take you directly inside the courtroom during the inquest to hear the voices and evidence of the key people involved in this gripping case.
Melanie and her team will be travelling to Invercargill at the bottom of New Zealand’s South Island to cover the three-week inquest in May 2024, followed by another two weeks in August.
Season Two of The Boy In The Water is coming soon to newsroom.co.nz and wherever you get your podcasts.

A Gripping story

Such a riveting story with twists and turns, beautifully told by Melanie in an undramatic, pragmatic way. She interviews people in a sympathetic, understanding way, careful not to trip them up so that they can share their story on their terms. However she seeks and provides clarity when she realises the audience needs more information or context.

Awesome

Fantastic podcast, excellent journalism, fascinating insights, extremely disturbing policing. I feel for the Lachies father, as a mother of a 3.5yo myself I would be searching for answers in the same way.
Look forward to hearing more after the latest review being under taken

NZ Police are a joke!

This truely highlights the extreme incompetence of the New Zealand police force and their inability and absolute reluctance to do their job thoroughly and efficiently. No investigation has taken place what so ever twice in fact! Just a very quick assumption that has come to the incorrect conclusion. This is excellent journalism and a very powerful and moving podcast that had me in tears at times. I really feel for Paul Jones through all of this whole ordeal and I sincerely hope that the truth of what happened to Lauchie Jones comes to light.
