Case 276: Claire Acocks & Margaret Penny

Case 276: Claire Acocks & Margaret Penny

May 3 1991, was a typical Friday for 58-year-old Margaret Penny. In the afternoon, she visited the Old London Coiffure in the heart of Portland, Victoria, for her weekly hair appointment with 49-year-old Claire Acocks. But when the two women are found stabbed to death in the salon’s shampoo room, the Portland rumour mill goes into overdrive.

Who could be motivated to commit such a brazen and vicious crime in the middle of the day, in the busiest part of town? And who was the “horrible man” with a hatred of hairdressers who had tormented Claire in the weeks before the crime?

Wow an eerily creepy case that I did not expect it to go in ways that it did. Very very sad all round for everyone involved. Not impressed with Jack and Jill’s mother’s behaviour, and I was wishing she’d get her comeuppance for being such a poor excuse…
I enjoyed the narration if he is a real person.

My Favourite True Crime

Being from NZ, it’s often a bit much listening to American true crime.

Unlike the US ones I don’t mind, this narrator has the ability to make it less about him and more about the stories in comparison to others.

nyalathotep ,

Increasingly boring, cringey writing

After a while, the droning narration, amateur writing/questionable literacy, pointless pedantry and disregard of important Antipodean cases in favour of boring, iterative American stories all starts to grate. My partner actually groans when I put this cast on now and I’m over it too.
