Dame Lisa Carrington - Will the Paris 2024 Olympics Be Her Last? Managing Self Doubt & More!

Dame Lisa Carrington - Will the Paris 2024 Olympics Be Her Last? Managing Self Doubt & More!

Dame Lisa Carrington is the Greatest NZ Olympian of all time- 5 gold medals and 1 bronze medal over the past 3 Olympic Games. And maybe she will add to that at the Paris Olympic Games.
This podcast is a re-release. It first came out at the start of 2023. I decided to rerelease it in time for the Paris Olympics because it was such a cool conversation.
Also, the podcast has grown so much since it came out I thought there would be a lot of new listeners who are unaware Lisa has even been a guest.
This is such a cool conversation. We see Lisa on TV, usually smiling on the podium with a gold medal around her neck followed by a 30-second sound bite on the news. But I have never heard Lisa be this candid before. Ever. This is a true look into the mind of a world-class athlete. You’ll get to know her strengths, weaknesses, flaws, fears, insecurities, and everything in between.
There are so many cool lessons and insights in this conversation:
The challenges female athletes face, such as maintaining balance between a demanding sports career and personal life ambitions.
Lisa opens up about the rigorous discipline required in her everyday life to be so good for so long.
We explore her early beginnings in Surf Life Saving, the crucial role played by her mentor Ian Ferguson, and the sacrifices required to train at an Olympic level from a young age.
Her reflections on body image and the scrutiny of being visibly muscular.
Then we chat about the Paris Olympics- will these Games be the last time we see Lisa Carrington compete at this level?
This episode is packed with valuable lessons for anyone- whether you want some tips to make your own life better or just learn more about a Kiwi icon.

Anna Mowbray on ZURU's Origin Story, Life in China, Parenting with Ali Williams, Auckland FC & More!

Anna Mowbray on ZURU's Origin Story, Life in China, Parenting with Ali Williams, Auckland FC & More!

Anna Mowbray is a farm kid from the Waikato who has grown up to be one of New Zealand’s most formidable entrepreneurs and businesspeople.
Her and her 2 brothers established Zuru and worked tirelessly to grow it into one of the biggest toy companies in the world.
Now she is building another brand from the ground up- Zeil, an app for job hunters.
    https://zeil.com/
This was an honor. Anna has done a few podcasts before, but they have all been business related. This is her first ever podcast where we got to learn a bit more about the person behind the jaw-dropping success.
We covered all the important stuff like why she went to see Taylor Swift in Sydney even though she’s not a Swiftie.
Her childhood in Tokoroa and Cambridge
The early years of the Zuru in China
How her and All Black Ali Williams got together and his memorable first impression- what she loves and hates about him.
How they manage to blend families and run a household with five kids, and not spoil the kids. And so much more!
Anna is a total weapon. Not to mention bloody good fun and I really appreciated her time, so I hope you guys enjoy this conversation.

A Helmet Saved His Life - Sam Clarke was Shot in the Head During 2023 Auckland Shooting

A Helmet Saved His Life - Sam Clarke was Shot in the Head During 2023 Auckland Shooting

    SAM CLARKE
On the morning of July 20th 2023, New Zealand was shocked by a shooting at Commercial Bay in Auckland’s CBD.
A man on electronically monitored bail took a gun to the construction site where he was working. He killed two colleagues with a shotgun, wounded seven other people, including a police officer, and then killed himself.
Sam Clarke, a husband and father, was shot that day. But he is not included in that list of victims.
Sam was working his dream job as a member of the NZ police Armed Offenders Squad when he was hit in the helmet by a bullet from the gunman. It was a job he loved, but a job he had to turn his back on because it nearly cost him his life.
This is part of his story.
In vivid detail he talks about the morning of July 20 and how it played out from the perspective of an on-duty cop.
Dealing with a concussion and struggling to reassure his loved ones, he was ok in the immediate aftermath.
The comprehensive support provided by the police force, including psychological and medical help.
The emotional and physical toll the incident took on him. And the transformative power of therapy and vulnerability.
Some of Sam's personal experiences about overcoming anxiety, dealing with flashbacks and much more.
It’s the first time Sam has done anything like this, and I can’t thank him enough for his courage in being so open and vulnerable with sharing his experience.
Follow Sam's new business, Response Rise:
He is using the skills he learned in the Police to teach others what to do in armed offender incidents, confrontational situations, retail crime and more.

Teuila Blakely on Shortland Street, Snapchat Scandal, Relationship with Oscar Kightley & More!

Teuila Blakely on Shortland Street, Snapchat Scandal, Relationship with Oscar Kightley & More!

Teuila Blakely is a total bad-ass and this was such a treat.
You may know her from her work on the old music channel C4, or Shortland Street, Bro-Town, Sione's Wedding or even DWTS or a zillion other things.
But this is less about her career and more about her journey- some pivotal moments that have shaped her personal and professional life.
From the challenges of being raised by a very tough mum, to then becoming a teenage solo-mum, humiliating experiences with racism, her beautiful friendship with her ex-fiancé Oscar Kightely, how she went from McDonalds to movies and so much more. Including THAT snap-chat incident.
Teuila is a genuine trailblazer, and it was an honor to have her share some of the less glamourous aspects of her life.
She is as authentic as it gets and an open book.

Mike Chunn on Leaving Split Enz, Recruiting Neil Finn & Living with Agoraphobia

Mike Chunn on Leaving Split Enz, Recruiting Neil Finn & Living with Agoraphobia

Mike Chunn is a national treasure who has devoted his entire life to NZ music.
Mike was one of the original members of the band Split Enz with his intermediate school friend, Tim Finn. Then due to severe agoraphobia he stepped away right before the band blew up and went on to be one of the greatest NZ bands of all time.
But he did go on to have an incredible career behind-the-scenes in the music business, including establishing Play-It-Strange song writing competition.
We talk in depth about his agoraphobia- the role and impact it has had on his life and how learned to co-exists with it.
Meeting Tim Finn and forming Split Enz, then getting Neil Finn to join the band.
His bet with Jacinda Ardern…which she still owes him for.
How his Play-It-Strange songwriting competition was born.
His Queens birthday honors and what that meant to his mum.
His thoughts on ageing and becoming a grandparent and much more.

World Champion Boxing Coach - Isaac Peach on Training Mea Motu, Overcoming Alcoholism & More!

World Champion Boxing Coach - Isaac Peach on Training Mea Motu, Overcoming Alcoholism & More!

Isaac Peach is impossible not to like- a down to earth plumber from West Auckland with 4 kids under 10 who is producing a stable of world champion boxers from a shed in his back yard.
In the conversation we chart Isaacs journey from struggling with alcoholism to establishing one of the country's most respected boxing gyms.
We cover a ton of ground here including:
His views on the novelty Mike Tyson- Jake Paul fight.
    His addiction battles.
How he transitioned from being a fighter to being arguably the best boxing trainer in NZ.
Why his wife, Aliana, thought he was a dick when they first met.
His relationship with his star student, world champion and former podcast guest Mea Motu and so much more.
I loved this chat and I reckon you guys will too.

Always a Surprise

Just finished listening to the Dion Nash episode, what a fascinating character with so much to share. This episode was the perfect length for a Sunday afternoon hill walk and could have kept walking f you both kept talking.

Hard to fault

Really hard to fault Dom’s ‘casual’ and unbiased interview technique. Each podcast sounds genuine and flows without sounding rehearsed (always police sirens in the background to back this up 😂). Today I listened to the Dion Nash (enjoyed the longer episode) and Caleb Morris episodes during my long run. 3.5 hours went by without realising and these are two people I’d normally skip past. Keep it up 👍🏽

Fascinating Listening

Very engaging podcast. Love the range of interviewees. Very inspiring and informative. I love Dom's relaxed manner with his guests but asks the tough questions and gets his guests talking. Well worth the listen
