Eugene Bareman on Relationship with Israel Adesanya, Fighter Pay in UFC & Meeting Mark Zuckerberg

Eugene Bareman on Relationship with Israel Adesanya, Fighter Pay in UFC & Meeting Mark Zuckerberg

    Eugene Bareman.
If you google his business “City Kickboxing” the first question that pops up is “Why is city kickboxing so good.”
Eugene and his gym have produced so many UFC stars- most notably Israel Adesanya, Dan Hooker and Kaikara France. He has even been recognized as the best MMA coach in the world in 2022.
We talk about his early years and his incredible drive and discipline.
What his goals were when he opened his gym.
His interactions with Dana White and his thoughts on the UFC and whether the fighters are paid fairly.
The weight of responsibility he feels as a coach of athletes in a sport that can literally be a matter of life and death.
Hilarious story about an interaction with Mark Zuckerberg and who would win an MMA fight between Zuck and Elon Musk. And so much more.
Thanks to my pals at Radix and Generate for making this conversation possible.

Jay-Jay Feeney - RE-RELEASE of my most downloaded episode so far

Jay-Jay Feeney - RE-RELEASE of my most downloaded episode so far

This conversation with Jay-Jay Feeney, NZ broadcasting royalty, came out one year ago, back when this was still a podcast for runners.
A lot of you may have heard it at the time, but there are a lot of brand new listeners to the podcast who may be hearing this for the first time.
This was a strange episode...just because of the intensely personal nature of it.
ICYMI: Jay-Jay and I got married in 2004. We separated about 6 years ago but remain very close.
Because of this relationship, we know everything about one another and had the ability to touch upon some very serious stuff. Because of that a trigger warning is needed- this podcast episode discusses family violence and sexual abuse, infertility and IVF, depression, and suicide.
If you listen to this and need some professional help in New Zealand, you can call or text 1737 free of charge to talk to a trained counsellor.

Thanks to Skin Institute for sponsoring this episode.
It’s estimated that about 20% of all adults will get varicose veins at some point in their lives.
As well as age, other risk factors include family history of veins disease, being overweight, standing jobs, and pregnancy. If left untreated, they can lead to serious health issues. Skin Institute are THE experts to diagnose and treat varicose veins and use the latest non-surgical techniques.
If you have health insurance, there’s a good chance your treatment will be covered – just check with your provider.

Rosie Overcomer, Former Gloriavale Member: “They Tried to Run My Husband Over”

Rosie Overcomer, Former Gloriavale Member: “They Tried to Run My Husband Over”

Rosie Overcomer was born and raised in Gloriavale.
She left 11 years ago at the age of 26 with her husband Elijah and their 3 young children.
Since then, they have had three more children and life looks very different to how it did a decade ago- we talk about these adjustments to life outside. Including getting her first haircut, celebrating a birthday for the first time at 28, and the liberating moment she wore jeans for the first time.
I found Rosie's story compelling, and I hope you guys do as well (quick apology for the sound issues towards the end- there were some tradies outside with a water blaster LOL).

I can genuinely say the podcast would not be where it is right now without Radix Nutrition. These guys reached out to me over 18 months ago to talk about podcast sponsorship at a time when podcast sponsorship was not yet a thing in NZ. And they have been on board ever since.
This sort of innovation they have with their marketing is the exact same innovation they apply to their products.
The team at Radix HQ in the Waikato do a phenomenal job and every team member, from the top down, want to make YOU healthier through nutrition.

Dying an Assisted Death - Tracy Hickman on Deciding to Die, Cancer Journey & Message for Others

Dying an Assisted Death - Tracy Hickman on Deciding to Die, Cancer Journey & Message for Others

Warning! This episode of The Dom Harvey Podcast may be upsetting to some listeners or viewers, it centers around terminal illness and assisted dying. Please listen with caution. This is the Tracy Hickman story.
In March 2019 Tracy, an ultra-marathon runner and accountant, went for a routine mammogram and was hit the devastating news she had an aggressive type of breast cancer.
Tracy and I met at the Boston marathon in 2023 where she was running despite battling cancer. You would not know she was sick unless she told you. Nor would you ever see her without a smile- relentlessly positive would be a perfect way to describe her.
Tracy asked me if we could do this podcast and it was a privilege.
Tracy's story is not just about her battles with cancer or the marathons she's run across all seven continents:
It's a larger story of relationships, love, and legacy. And also, an opportunity to shine a light on assisted dying—a subject she believes deserves more coverage and open conversation.
I’d like to think this episode is a celebration of Tracy Hickman's undeniable fabulousness. Her wit, warmth, and willingness to discuss topics often shroud in silence.
At the very least, I hope this makes all of us appreciate what we have and to make the most of today. Because you never know what tomorrow may bring.
    Dom

James Marshall on Crusaders '24 Season, What A Lad Podcast & Lessons from Razor

James Marshall on Crusaders '24 Season, What A Lad Podcast & Lessons from Razor

James “Jimmy” Marshall is a man of many talents, with an unreal work ethic.
After an epic rugby career that included winning a super rugby title with the Hurricanes then captaining Taranaki to an ITM cup title. He has turned to coaching and last year joined the Crusaders coaching crew after being shoulder tapped by Razor Robertson.
Off the field, he has built the incredible “What A Lad” podcast.
This conversation covers some of the very rich Jimmy Marshall story. Hope you like it.
Shout out to the sponsors of this episode- Radix and Generate.
Radix are one of the most innovative nutrition companies in the world. AND they are doing their global magic from their state-of-the-art factory in the Waikato. If you are yet to see what the hype is all about, you should try them out.

LadyKelTodd ,

Ngā mihi 🙏🏻

I have been a casual listener from the very start. Just listened to episode with Tracey Hickman - WOW. Thank you for the diversity your show brings and the courage you have to simply be yourself, to shine a light on things that also might be controversial but also brings awareness with no fluff. I’m humbled by this episode. Ngā mihi nui!

Best podcast in NZ

Absolutely love this show. The guests are always interesting, the research Dom puts in and the long form story telling is brilliant. Fab for a long run, for the reminders that it’s okay to embrace failure and to make the work commute bearable- love your work Dom!
