In 1 John, John leaves us no room to hide as a Christian. We either believe AND live life as a believer at all costs or we never truly believed and such self-deception is a grave danger to our souls. It really is both a letter of affirmation of the eternal joys of following Christ and a warning for all of us, that we can fool others and most of all, ourselves into thinking we are followers of Jesus.

We saw that John had two reasons to write this letter which were the two goals for the Christian life: 1) to proclaim the Gospel and 2) to have fellowship with us, the Father, and the Son. We are going to delve deeply into the last goal, “that our joy may be complete.”

Last time we looked at John’s first letter, we looked at the goal of the Christian life: fellowship with one another and fellowship with the Father and Son. And as verse 4 makes clear, this is the ONLY way human beings can have complete, soul-satisfying joy. So we will continue to look at this fellowship journey by examining 2 points this week and 2 next week: 1) Fellowship begins with God (v. 3-4) and 2) Fellowship requires walking with God (v. 6-7).
