    Pentecost with Fr. Rob

    Pentecost with Fr. Rob

In this episode of the Catholic Link podcast. Fr. Rob and Fr. George discuss the Solemnity of Pentecost. The gift of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost gave the Apostles and other disciples new courage. Famously, all the Jews from around the known world understood the Apostles despite the language barrier. Fr. Rob and Fr. George compare this event to the Tower of Babel in Genesis. Without a desire to know God, the builders of the Tower no longer understood each other's language. Now, with the Holy Spirit's guidance, the Catholic Faith is able to spread around the world. In our own lives, we too are called to allow the Spirit to work through us for his glory.

Listen to the previous episode where Fr. Rob and Fr. George discussed thoughts about Christian TikTok and social media at large. Fr. Rob recovered from COVID and spent a lot of time on TikTok and he shares some of what he found. He encourages social media users to understand that not everything on the internet is true. Fr. Rob discusses how living the Gospel faithfully is more important than preoccupying oneself with hot-button issues that divides our Church. That is not to say that those issues are insignificant. It is to say, rather, that we each have a particular role in the Church and we should remain faithful to that role so the whole body can flourish.

Listen to the previous episode where Fr. Rob and Fr. George discussed discuss the role of the Holy Spirit within the economy of salvation. As Pentecost approaches, it is important to address this person of the Trinity's role in salvation. Fr. Rob and Fr. George distinguish the ultimate Fruits of the Spirit with the accidental gifts of the Spirit. While one may have particular charisms associated with the Holy Spirit that manifest in a particular way, the presence of the Holy Spirit cannot be denied where there is love, peace, and charity.

Listen to the previous episode where Fr. Rob discussed a way to meditate on the Book of Revelation. Some people read Revelation and try to map world history or current events onto what they read. Fr. Rob proposes another meditation of the book. He suggests that we read Revelation as a foretaste of the Heavenly Liturgy that the Saints and angels participate in. Further, in the book, the Risen Christ is aware of the events in his Church. So, we can take courage and peace knowing that Christ knows and is in control of what is happening now. Lastly, yes, the Book of Revelation contains information about the End Times. Fr. Rob proposes that we focus less so on what is happening around us that may signal the End Times. Rather, he suggests we reflect on the mystery that the world will end and all will be fulfilled in Christ with his glory.

Pentecost with Fr. Rob: A Throwback

Pentecost with Fr. Rob: A Throwback

In this episode of the Catholic Link podcast, Fr. Rob discusses the feast of Pentecost. Fr. Rob identifies how Pentecost is the only Jewish feast that is on the Catholic Liturgical Year Calendar.

Listen to the previous episode where Fr. Rob discussed a way to meditate on the Book of Revelation. Some people read Revelation and try to map world history or current events onto what they read. Some of the important Jewish feast days also include: the Feast of Booths, the Day of Atonement, and Hanukkah, which commemorates the rededication of the Temple after the Jews drove out Hellenistic rule and as described in the book of Maccabees. Fr. Rob then discusses how Pentecost is, yes, the birthday of the Church, but it is still fundamentally a harvest festival. In the Old Testament, Pentecost celebrated the grain harvest that grew from February or March. In the New Covenant, the celebration is a harvest of the people. The Acts of the Apostles describes many different people understand the Apostles speaking Galilean in their native tongue. This symbolizes the Church beginning to harvest souls from all corners of the Earth. Finally, Fr. Rob invites all of us to participate in that harvest and praying to the Holy Spirit to help one's own evangelization efforts and build a fruitful harvest for the Lord.
