How Hip Hop Made the World: Dr. Todd Boyd on Cultural Foundations & Global Impact of Hip Hop

In this episode of "Hip Hop Can Save America!," host Manny Faces converses with renowned cultural critic and author Dr. Todd Boyd aka The Notorious Ph.D. about the dynamic history and significant impact of Hip Hop culture.
Dr. Boyd, whose latest book "Rapper's Deluxe: How Hip Hop Made the World" sheds light on Hip Hop's 50-year journey, discusses the genre's origins in the urban decay of 1970s New York, influenced by blaxploitation films, Richard Pryor's comedy, and the distinctive styles of returning Vietnam veterans -- and takes us through the next few decades as the genre and culture go on to reach global influence.

Why Questlove's "Hip Hop Is Truly Dead" Claim is Wrong... and Harmful

Why Questlove's "Hip Hop Is Truly Dead" Claim is Wrong... and Harmful

In the wake of the Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake rap beef, opinions and hot takes have flooded in about the battle, including some from high-profile figures like Stevie Wonder and Rick Ross. In this video, I challenge one controversial opinion from the respected Hip Hop historian and musicologist, Questlove.
Is Hip Hop really "truly dead," or is Questlove's knee-jerk statement causing more harm than good to the culture he claims to care about?

Hip Hop Doesn't Need 'More Balance' in the Mainstream! (Wait. What??)

Hip Hop Doesn't Need 'More Balance' in the Mainstream! (Wait. What??)

Many people long for more "balance" when it comes to the content of rap music being played on radio or is promoted on streaming and social media channels. Manny Faces suggests we shouldn't focus on the mainstream music business at all when it comes to finding ways to change what young people are being exposed to.
Realizing that while music is subjective, popular rap certainly doesn't represent the depth of Hip Hop's total social, cultural or creative ethos. However, calling attention to this distinction (as many do), making different music (as many do), or trying to fight for change within the music/radio/streaming businesses (as many do) -- while worthy and necessary work -- isn't where the real solution lies.
