Episode 6 - The Beautiful Struggle with Colby Sanford
This week on the podcast I am excited to present to one of my current, favorite artists, Colby Sanford! I first discovered Colby on Pinterest and immediately searched for his Instagram page. I instantly connected to his artwork, and I am sure you will too. What draws me to Colby’s art is that it is all about his day to day life, and it is almost as if his paintings bring back memories of my own childhood, or of my own children.
In this episode, I get to know Colby on a more personal level. He shares about his wife, children, and where he lives. We also learn about all of the twists and turns that his art journey has taken, and how he ended up being the current artist that he is. Colby shares about his day to day life, and how he is always striving to find that balance between family and work - the beautiful struggle. His work relies on being in the moment with his family, and capturing those tiny precious moments. So spending time with them is important in more ways than one. I just found this really special!
Colby discusses his biggest struggle as an artist, and what his ultimate goals are. He also shares with us what message he hopes to deliver to his fans. This conversation with Colby was pure joy, and I hope that you are encouraged to look for the small precious moments in your own life after you listen! Get comfy with your favorite crocheted blanket, and take a listen!

Sarah is a prolific painter of still life and portraits and an extraordinary oil painting instructor. Based in Eugene Oregon, Sarah’s oil paintings explore the simple beauty of everyday objects, and are most often inspired by color combinations and perceptual effects. All are painted from life. Her teaching philosophy is simple: the more you paint, the more yoU improve - so find ways to make painting as enjoyable as possible! Let go of perfectionism, and watch the results unfold
In this conversation, Sarah shares all about love during a pandemic, the importance of teaching, growing up with a professional musician, and more! She discusses the moment she was able to call herself an “artist” and how happy she is to give out “artist” badges to anyone that wants one!

That’s the piece that you should do, with Robert Kelley
I absolutely loved this podcast, and Kara, your easy interview style, and how you have such open exchange with your guests. Robert Kelley was incredibly open about both his personal struggles and artistic journey. I found his advice and comments on only painting what you love hits the nail on the head. I can always see the difference in my art when I just paint what I want and am inspired by. I have spent years in the wrong mode on and off, pursuing “what a buyer might like.” No truer words were ever spoken than when Robert said you often feel a connection with someone’s art when they paint what they love. Kudos to you for such an inspiring dialogue with such an interesting and open and talented artist. His humility was quite refreshing.
That’s the piece that you should do with Robert Kelley
Robert Kelley shares all the good, the challenging and the truth about life as an artist. Kara Bullock always strives to offer the best. Her new podcast does not disappoint. Kudos to Robert and Kara on an interesting and honest interview.
I love Kara’s take on the traditional artist-interview podcast - getting a look at the person behind the paintings! Kara’s warm and friendly demeanor brings out the best in her guests. You’ll learn something you didn’t know before about your favorite artists!
