Com d'Archi DEPONDT Anne-Charlotte

A prototype building, a daring structure, an ambitious program, the new headquarters of the French National Forestry Office takes up urban, constructive and social challenges.
In this Com d'Archi, written by Anne-Charlotte, based on the French interview with the two agencies, discover this innovative architecture, the largest building made exclusively of French wood.
This project embodies the dualities of contemporary architecture, in a subtle harmony between tradition and disruption, heritage and urban transformation, openness and discretion.
Because, according to Vincent Lavergne 'Architecture is also about breaking down walls'.
How to work between city and park? How to transition from the office tower to the horizontality of the forest? How to accompany the evolution of work modes while offering each user spaces adapted to their preferences? For Samuel Poutoux and Vincent Lavergne, the human dimension has shaped the architecture as much as the urban design or the construction systems. Thus the project consists of two wings, one offering traditional, partitioned work spaces, the other collaborative spaces, linked by an interior street, a forest path. Constructive excellence does not prevent dreaming, quite the contrary.
The transition between the city and the park is just as delicate, thanks to a cantilever at the tip of the plot, a structural feat for an architecture of effacement. From the park, the street appears under the bow of the building.
How can the association of wood and mixed construction systems be a solution to write this complex, dense city? Here is a successful and skilful attempt at a response.

Le nouveau siège de l'Office National des Forêts ONF, tout juste livré en 2022, réalisé en bois, est plébiscité par la presse française généraliste et spécialisée ! Occasion d'un pas de côté dans Com d'Archi : organiser une interview sur ce projet innovant et exceptionnel plutôt que sur un parcours d'architecte. Une fois n'est pas coutume. Ainsi les dirigeants et fondateurs des agences VLAU et Atelier Woa, Vincent Lavergne et Samuel Poutoux, viennent présenter ce projet démonstrateur qui interroge la capacité de la France à organiser des filiales industrielles, de manière à assurer la transition écologique. 
Dans ce numéro, en évitant les redites autant que possible, ils parlent du projet de manière holistique et notamment, exposent les conditions de la commande et le parti architectural de cette œuvre située sur le site exceptionnel de l'Ecole Vétérinaire de Maisons-Alfort. Ces deux voix d'architectes, qui représentent respectivement leurs agences et leurs équipes, se font écho et finissent par fusionner dans un discours de passionnés, dédié à cette architecture exceptionnelle.

Martin Duplantier fell into architecture as a child. Armed with this DNA, he took three courses of study: HEC, architecture and urban planning, including experience in Catalonia. Then, during his first years with David Chipperfield, his vision as an architect took shape. A competition for HEC launched him as a freelancer. 
In this English-language issue of Com d'Archi, we take a closer look at Ukraine, of course, where Martin practises. His "insider" view, unique here in France, deserves to be widely known and relayed.

Martin Duplantier est tombé dans l'architecture quand il était petit. Fort de cet ADN, il suit trois cursus : HEC, architecture, urbanisme dont une expérience catalane. Puis, lors de ses premières armes chez David Chipperfield, sa vision d'architecte s'affermit. Un concours pour HEC le lance en tant qu'indépendant.

Mastery of a project depends on mastery of its construction.
It is this motto that has driven Samuel Poutoux, architect, and Marc-Henri Maxit, economist and carpenter contractor, to create L’Atelier WOA (Wood Oriented Architecture). Since 2012, the two 'partners in crime’, and their associates, are specialists of mixed construction systems where wood plays a central role. At a time where economy of ressources is necessary, whether it be material or land, their practice articulates mixed structures and programmes.
In this episode, through Esther’s voice, they talk about two of their projects sharing one plot of land. Two different clients, two different programmes, one site. How did L’Atelier WOA use densification to harmonize various uses and allow the creation of a shared park in the middle?
This exemple illustrates how WOA implements not only ecological and economical solutions but also social and societal intentions, often forgotten by green labels.
A testimony full of nuances and optimism on creating today a living environment for tomorrow.

La maîtrise du projet passe par la maîtrise de sa fabrication. C’est fort de cette conviction que Samuel Poutoux et Rémi Crozat, architectes, s’associent avec Marc-Henri Maxit, économiste et entrepreneur charpentier, pour créer en 2012 une structure résolument pluridisciplinaire baptisée WOA, acronyme de Wood Oriented Architecture. Parmi les trois partenaires, deux disposent déjà d’une solide expérience en construction bois. Depuis, un nouvel associé, Julien Déchanet, est venu enrichir le peloton de tête de l'agence qui compte en moyenne un effectif de 20 personnes. Ils livrent actuellement avec VLAU _Vincent Lavergne Architecture urbanisme_ le fameux siège social de l'ONF _Office National des Forêts_ à Maisons-Alfort en région parisienne.
Nous recevons dans ce numéro de Com d'Archi deux des protagonistes : Samuel Poutoux et Marc-Henri Maxit. Ils nous racontent leurs parcours respectifs, leur amour du métier, l'histoire de leurs projets et donnent leur avis de manière plus globale sur le métier et la filière bois. A l'heure des premières alarmes concernant la construction bois et ses dérives, nous sommes particulièrement heureux d'avoir recueilli ce témoignage nuancé de sachants, et d'hommes de terrain. A découvrir absolument !
