Climate Change and the Ocean, with Amy Then

Climate Change and the Ocean, with Amy Then

Climate change is already impacting and will continue to affect the health of our oceans and marine life in many ways. This in turn will affect the wellbeing and safety net of coastal communities and countries. Think of more coastal flooding events and storminess, and also less available fish on the table. In this episode, Eva Vivian Justine, a marine conservationist and COASTAR fellow, speaks to Dr Amy Then, a senior lecturer and coastal-marine researcher in Universiti Malaya, about how climate change affects our oceans, with a focus on fish. Amy ends with some personal insights on what we as individuals can do. To find out more about Eva's work to protect turtles in coastal Kudat, Sabah visit https://linktr.ee/ktcsborneo.

    Slow Fashion, with Najah Onn

    Slow Fashion, with Najah Onn

When thinking about fashion, clothing and the textiles industry, we don’t normally think about climate change. But did you know that the fashion trends we follow, and the clothes we wear, can contribute to climate change and global warming? In this episode, we learn about Slow Fashion, and how adopting a more  sustainable fashion sense makes a lot of sense, whether you are an environmentalist, a fashionista or a #ConsciousFashionista. We speak with Najah Onn, an environmental engineer and business improvement consultant working in the fashion supply chain. Najah blogs about #FashionEducation, #wardrobetruths and being a #ConscientiousFashionista on her blog, www.fashinfidelity.com. For tips on adopting Slow Fashion, see Najah's slides at https://www.slideshare.net/NajahOnn/slow-fashion-lifestyle-by-najah-onn.

Rescuing Food, with Alvin AJ Chen

Rescuing Food, with Alvin AJ Chen

In food-haven Malaysia, no gathering is complete without a feast. Malaysians are known for our love of makan-makan! We like to pile our plates, but we often don’t finish our food! And the extra-large portion that could have filled two or three hungry bellies often goes to waste, ending up in our landfills, producing green house gases heating up the planet. And this is happening alongside growing food insecurity among the urban poor. In this episode, we talk to Alvin AJ Chen and the efforts of the aptly-named NGO, What a Waste Malaysia, to rescue good food and tackle urban poverty hunger.

Private vehicles like cars and motorbikes all run on fuel, and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change and global warming. Swapping your car, motorbike, or even public transportation, with a bicycle is one fun way to practice active transportation, and curb climate change. In this episode, we catch up with cycling enthusiast, Pepper Lim, and learn how to incorporate cycling into our daily lives so that we can enjoy the breeze and the view as we cycle, get fit along the way, and cut down on fuel consumption and save money. Pepper Lim is a STEM advocate and author of "Cycling Fun and Easy".
