Clara Zetkin - Socialist fighter against fascism, women's oppression & war

Clara Zetkin - Socialist fighter against fascism, women's oppression & war

Clara Zetkin was a leading German socialist thinker and organizer in the late 19th and early 20th century. She founded International Women's Day, opposed WWI and in the shadow of the rising Nazi power, and bravely opened what would become the last session of the Reichstag (Germany's parliament) with a call to struggle in unity against fascism.
John Riddell, Kate Connelly and Matt Willgress discuss how her ideas remain relevant for those who want to take on the far-right and build movements to challenge oppression, war and capitalism today.
    • John Riddell is co-editor with Mike Taber of the acclaimed collection 'Fighting Fascism: How to Struggle & How to Win' by Clara Zetkin. He has been active in the socialist movement in Canada, the United States & Europe since 1960 & is a world-renowned historian of world socialist movements.
    • Kate Connelly is a writer & historian. She led student strikes in the 2003 anti-war movement & co-ordinated the Emily Wilding Davison Memorial Campaign in 2013. She wrote 'Sylvia Pankhurst: Suffragette, Socialist and Scourge of Empire' & edited 'A Suffragette in America: Reflections on Prisoners, Pickets and Political Change'.
Part of the Socialist Ideas series, presented by Arise - a Festival of Left Ideas and Labour Outlook.
