The office of Children and Young People’s Commissioner for Scotland office turns 18 on 26 April 2022. We’ve championed children’s human rights for the length of an entire childhood!

The first Commissioner, from April 2004, was Professor Kathleen Marshall. Tam Baillie held the post from 2009, and was followed by Bruce Adamson in 2017.

In this series, guided by questions from children and young people, all three Children's Commissioners discuss their work, the progress of children's rights in Scotland, and the important changes they would still like to see.

The podcast was co-produced by one of the office’s young advisers with Bespoken Media, and music was created by young people working with Big Noise, Sistema Scotland.

    The CYPCS role has turned 18 - so Professor Kathleen Marshall, Tam Baillie and current commissioner Bruce Adamson have come together to discuss their shared challenge as Children's Commissioners, and the role's strengths as an independent champion for children’s rights.
    This third and final episode focuses on what it's like to come to the end of a Children's Commissioner's fixed term, to have unfinished business, and to hand over to a successor to take on your work.

    As the post of Children and Young People's Commissioner for Scotland turns 18, the three people to have held the role discuss their shared experiences.

    This second episode explores the changes they've been able to make, and the challenges they have faced along the way.

    This is the
    first time that all three have been together in conversation to discuss the
    progress of children’s rights in Scotland, the issues that have endured
    throughout the 18 years, the cultural changes in their tenures and the changes
    they would still like to see.  They discuss the unique challenges of the
    role and its strengths as an independent champion for children’s rights.
     

    Issues
    covered include putting children’s rights into law, impact of Covid-19,
    poverty, access to play, involving children and young people and how Scotland’s
    treats children in its criminal justice system.
