DJs statement: This was a special mix that I've been planning for a while. Countless tracks have been added and subtracted in the process of choosing a final line up. Needless to say, this is only Volume 1, and further installments will be coming forth soon. The material presented here reflects a sound I'm calling deeper roots, a style of heavily rasta-influenced traditional roots reggae and dub music played presently by sound men like the UK's Jah Shaka, and in the past by Channel One, Fatman, and of course on Jamaican producer King Tubby's Hometown Hi-Fi. The songs take the form of declarations of rights, and statements about rasta livity. Take for instance Rod Taylor's two entries, "No One Can Tell I About Jah," and "Leaving Rome," both of which are heartfelt presentations of his spiritual point of view. The Lee Perry-produced cut by Devon Irons is also forthright in it's dread declaration about what awaits the wicked "When Jah Come." Knowledge echo these "last days" sentiments on "Borrowed Time" (featuring a great Charlie Chaplin DJ cut on the flipside), while Horace Andy reflects that he doesn't want to be left outside when "Zion Gate" closes. Daily strife is covered vividly on Enps McLeod's "Tel Aviv," where he recounts a bloody street war between two downtown Kingston factions. This mix was done all from vinyl records with a few sound effects added later. I hope you enjoy this installment and check back for future sets soon. – DJ Tomas SF / Umoja Hi-Fi Soundstation -

Love For Earth Volume 2: Indian Summer Jazz: Sunset Side
Welcome to another installment of the DJ Tomas Early Mix Series.
After about 15 years of promises and procrastination I've finally been able to digitize this mixtape. "Love For Earth Volume 2: Indian Summer Jazz" was one of my most popular mixes, or so I've been told over the years. Interestingly it ended up in a lot car tapedecks in Los Angeles and elsewhere and probably soundtracked number of comedown drives from desert raves. The title references California's extended late summer and early fall bouts with bucolic weather.
Musically it represents a peak in the trip-hop/downtempo electronic period in the mid-90s when nary a week passed without a clutch new of must-have singles being released from labels like Mo'Wax, Ninja Tune, Cup of Tea, Talking Loud and dozens of smaller imprints.
This mix was definitely enjoyable to do and to hear the reaction it produced. I'm happy to offer it again after all these years. One caveat: this is a direct cassette-to-digital transfer, without any mastering (I'm lazy), so the sound is accordingly lo-fi. Song-wise, though, it's pretty stellar!
Cover design by Guy from Funk Pistol, Hawaii.
