Today's dominant narrative says Europe’s democracy is in retreat. The challenges are real – past generations saw democracy’s promises of liberty and prosperity deliver mixed results. But that isn’t the whole story. Throughout Europe, young leaders give voice to democracy’s impact in their day-to-day work. To elevate these voices, the International Republican Institute and National Democratic Institute launched the European Democracy Youth Network (EDYN) – a coalition of political and civic leaders, ages 18-32, with a shared commitment to democratic principles

    The COVID-19 pandemic has brought a common cause to people around the world - slow the spread of the coronavirus. The modern world has never been so closed, so during this difficult period of time it's important to share stories of life in different countries and to remind people that we all are humans and stand together.

    EDYN's Stories is happy to release a special series of podcasts that will discuss how different countries are dealing with restrictions caused by COVID-19. In the fourth episode, Carlo Angrisano, chairman of the European Democrat Students Network, talks about how COVID-19 has impacted the lives of so many people in Spain, and how students like himself are working to deal with it.

    Carlo Angrisano is a chairman of the European Democrat Students Network, the largest political students' network in Europe and the official student organization of the European People's Party. Carlo is also the Deputy Secretary for International Relations for Nuevas Generaciones (NNGG), the youth wing of Partido Popular in Spain.

In the third episode, Faris Nuhanović, Professor of Management Sciencec, talks about how COVID-19 has disrupted businesses and the economy in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

    Faris Nuhanović is a professor of management science at the Faculty for Tourism and Management in Konjic. Since 2009, he has been involved in the NGO sector, including in a foundation for arts and education in Amadeus, Udruzenje Metamorfoza, and in many informal gatherings for the promotion of art, human rights, rights of minorities. Faris is also an EDYN Ambassador.

In the second episode, Donjet Bislimi, head of his political party's youth wing and a medical doctor, talks about the current situation in Kosovo, and what it looks like from the front lines.

    Donjet Bislimi is a Kosovar activist and youth leader. He is President of the PDK Youth Wing and a medical doctor. In his role in the youth wing, he has conducted multiple youth outreach activities and organized different policy roundtables on the issues that matter to Kosovar youth. Donjet studied medicine at the University of Pristina and has also been elected to the municipal assembly of Mitrovica.

    For more than five years, Volha has been a regional activist and co-founder of the social initiative Rudabelskaya pakazukha, which helps people in Belarus to protect their rights and discuss acute social problems. 

    Oleksandr Reshetkov is an EDYN Ambassador from Ukraine. Oleksandr is the Deputy Head of NGO Solidarna Molod, the youth wing of the European Solidarity political party. Oleksandr is actively involved in social and political activities. As an International Secretary of the NGO European Youth Community, Oleksandr organized dozens of training courses for youth under the Erasmus+ program.

    As the novel strain of coronavirus, COVID-19, forces travel restrictions, stay-at-home orders, and border lockdowns worldwide, EDYN Member Oleksandr Reshetkov interviews Josh R. Kroeker about living abroad, migration, brain drain, and what a country can do to make their educated youth return home. Although Canada is his home, Josh has lived abroad for nearly seven years, and being stuck abroad due to the pandemic prompts a discussion of why young people like himself are tempted to emigrate in search of education or opportunities and what that means for their home country.

    Josh R. Kroeker studies international relations as a graduate student at Saint Petersburg State University, and he is a PhD candidate of Heidelberg University. Josh specializes in Russian and Ukrainian affairs. He has been involved in the European Union’s Erasmus+ program and works with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung.

    Maia Mazerukiewicz is a co-founder and member of the Management Board responsible for Strategy and Fighting disinformation of Alliance4Europe and coordinator of the European Front and Keyboard Warriors in Poland.
