In this episode, I look at the formation of in groups and out groups in humans. I consider the evolutionary origins for this phenomenon, the selective pressures that led to in-groups and the advantages they provide for their members. I look at how in-groups can be sex-specific with one sex forming stronger bonds than another, and what that means if that sex has violent tendencies already. I also consider the by-products of this primal form of community organization and the psychological effects on members of the in-group and members of the out-group, particularly xenophobia.
The January 6th insurrection was one of the purest expressions of xenophobic aggression from members of an in-group towards a targeted out-group. Members of Cult 45, after being motivated and directed by their leader stormed the Capitol Building in Washington, DC, with the goal of stopping the certification of the Presidential election in any way necessary, including hanging members of Congress and then Vice President Mike Pence.
By the end of this discussion, it is my hope that the audience will understand why the formation of cults is completely natural, but is also exceedingly dangerous.
