Nonbinary Gender: Scholarship and Experience LGBTQ+ Studies Certificate Students at UM-Dearborn

Although the term “nonbinary” appeared in the 1960s, it has only recently become well-known. The use of the term multiplied tenfold from 2013 to 2019 and continues to increase. We begin by studying genders beyond the binary in historical and global contexts. Then we discuss the growing recognition of nonbinary gender in the twenty-first century, the conditions that enabled this to happen, and the lived experiences of nonbinary individuals in various contexts. We also consider nonbinary experiences in various social contexts, including ways in which allies can support nonbinary individuals.

10: Conclusion
To close out the series, the hosts come together to review big ideas from each episode, what resonated with them, and hear once more from our panelists. After a summer of research, we hope that Nonbinary Gender: Scholarship and Experience culminated as a well rounded, intersectional, and empathetic look into the lives of nonbinary identities. 9: Impact Over Intent: Being an Ethical Ally
As we wrap up the series, Lauren and Payton want to equip you with the knowledge and skills to be an ally and advocate for gender queer folks. In this episode, they discuss micro-affirmations, acknowledging pronouns, and enacting change on intimate, local, and policy levels. Our focus has been on research, but we can utilize research to promote inclusion and validation of nonbinary identities. Have a listen and implement the strategies that best align with your journey!

Payton and Zenon discuss a number a themes that have been recorded amongst nonbinary folks and their relationships. These bonds are impactful to the wellness and visibility of nonbinary lives.
