    The Importance of The Mentor

    The Importance of The Mentor

This fourth episode is recorded in the studio of artist Marleen Sleeuwits. Geert Vlieger meets up with her and Annebel Bruschinski, who we already know from the first episode of this series. In 2020 Annebel became Marleen’s intern, and prolonged their collaboration in 2021 by becoming her assistant. They talk about the benefits of the mentor-mentee relationship. How did Annebel approach Marleen in the first place? What did Annebel learn from Marleen when they were working together?

Marleen Sleeuwits (1980, NL) obtained her BA in 2001 from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and her MA in 2005 at AKV|St. Joost in Breda. Since then her oeuvre has been acknowledged through institutional exhibitions, public and private collection acquisitions and several awards, stipends, and nominations.

Annebel Bruschinski (1998, NL) graduated from the HKU in Utrecht in 2021. After that she participated in several exhibitions amongst others in the group exhibition Connection at Galerie Bart.

    The Business Side

    The Business Side

In our previous episode we learned that it is not realistic to solely rely on grants and subsidies. What other steps can you take? In this episode Nienke van der Wal talks about how you can reach an audience that is interested in buying your art, and how you can implement marketing in your daily practice without affecting the autonomy of your work.

Nienke van der Wal (NL) describes herself as “an experienced strategist with over 18 years of experience in the cultural sector and full of entrepreneurial spirit”. She offers her clients consultancy, coaching and training in the field of cultural entrepreneurship. She is also the founder of the Young Collectors Circle.

Thanks for Galerie Bart for making this podcast possible and Tolhuistuin for hosting the interview.
