Session 09 • Guest Mix by Unscene Tailor Made Sessions

    • Musik

Ahoy good mense,

We have with us on this very special sessions, DJ extraordinaire from JHB, Unscene. Here are a few elaborate words from the maestro himself.
“I’m based in JHB, South Africa. I first DJed in 2001. The name relates to my passion for
diversity. I am a student of the dub mixing style which features across many forms of music.
I’m a thinker and a listener. I see the potential of music to offer perspective. This podcast
came about at the last minute after months of dub delay. As it was a home recording it’s not
all for the floor, and it’s not all deep but book me and we can arrange this. I recorded many
hours – it’s imperfect. Just like a maths exam I might get basic equations wrong but ace the
bigger picture question. I employ harmonic mixing, aesthetic and thematic analysis, and
focus more on groove and feel than the basics which is why 2s might land on 1s. I use two
turntables and in this case DJed on timecode vinyl. Some fun I had making this mix: broke
my R200 headphones and taped them up but they don’t quite close, letting my son scratch
the motor broke on my Numark TTX so it stops when you place your hand on the record – I
used a very old TT-1 instead but its torque fluctuates... haha, anyway. My new DJ set up is
live MIDI synth/fx and a mic for vocals/percussion. Finding a way to do this with mnml
latency. I recorded separates on an edit this way last week and plan to do this live at gigs.“

We do hope you enjoy the selection.

Peace and Prosperity to you all.
