    Episode Notes
[“We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” from Encanto]
Trent: Hello everyone, and welcome to Episode One of Pop Chaos, your one-stop shop for pop culture. If you did your homework, you just listened to episode zero. We’re not introducing ourselves again. But I’m Trent.
Bailey: I’m Bailey and you just said we’re not going to introduce ourselves, yet here we are.
Trent: This week we’re talking about Spider-Man, right? No Way Home.
Bailey: We are going to talk about a lot of things. Spider-Man…
    Trent: Encanto.
    Bailey: Encanto for sure.
Trent: What was the other thing?
Bailey: There were some other things we were going to talk about.
    Trent (overlapping): Such as?
Bailey: For one, Elmo, I wanted to bring up.
Trent: Oh yeah, you need to explain to me what is going on with Elmo.
Bailey: Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then maybe just like some, some other shows that are big and coming up right now. I was thinking about mentioning, you know, Succession. Euphoria season two is coming out.
Trent: Oh yeah, have not seen Succession.
Bailey: Well, I don’t know. The big two we’re gonna talk about are Encanto and Spider-Man-slash-Andrew Garfield. The resurgence. He’s big right now. Very big.
Trent: That’s true. Should we – we should just get right into Spider-Man. He is huge, actually, on Twitter and like TikTok. There – I saw a tweet that was like, “The K-Pop-ification of Andrew Garfield.” I think people were like, “Stream The Amazing Spider-Man,” to get him that recognition.
Bailey: Well, so I’m curious. I just want to double-check real quick how old he is.
    Trent (overlapping): We’ll embed that.
Bailey: I want to check how old he is.
Trent (overlapping): He’s like in his late 30s, I want to say.
Bailey: Ooh! So I looked him up on Google.
    Trent (in the background): 45.
Bailey: And unfortunately, he’s shorter than both of us. That's … yeah…
Trent (gasping): With his hair, it’s fine.
Bailey: He’s 5’10”. That's true. His hair like defies gravity, so.
Trent: Wait, no but how old is he?
Bailey: He is 38 years old.
    Trent: What’d I tell you? Late 30s.
Bailey: Yeah, he looks great for his age. Did you watch – sorry, we were gonna talk about Spider-Man. But did you watch tick, tick… BOOM!, because it’s on topic?
Trent: No, so I saw like the trailer.
    Bailey (in the background): Okay.
Trent: I did not – okay. Not to bring up Andrew Garfield’s hair again. I cannot get past his hair in the trailer. It looks, I think personally –
Bailey: It looks like Jonathan Larson’s hair though, who he’s portraying.
Trent (overlapping): I know. But that doesn’t mean I like it.
Bailey: Okay. So you’re just not gonna watch the entire movie because of his hair? It was too bouncy?
    Trent: Correct.
Bailey: It did … it did look…
Trent: It looks like he’s like a mad scientist and it blew up.
Bailey: Yeah, it looks like he touched one of those little balls that makes you – WOOOOO!
    Trent: Those electric balls –
Bailey (joking): But like not in a gay way. Yeah, and it also –
    Trent (laughing): …Bailey…

Bailey: I dunno, it also looks like … I don’t know, I think it looked kind of bouncy, kind of good, like kind of shampoo commercial sort of… Yeah.
Trent (overlapping): Anyway, Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Bailey (in the background): Yeah, enough about Andrew Garfield’s hair.
Trent: Andrew Garfield’s done. What did you think of No Way Home?
Bailey (overlapping): Well okay, first off, spoiler alert. Like if you have not seen it.
Trent: Oh, yeah, obviously. If you haven’t seen Spider-Man or Encanto, we’re talking about both of those.
Bailey: Yeah, let me not shame you though because if you don’t want to go to the movie theater right now, that is a-okay. But also, what are you doing? You got to see this g-dang movie. I don’t know. I… I did like, I binge-watched all the other Spider-Man movies.
Trent (overlapping): Like all – like, all seven of them?
    Bailey: Yeah, pretty much

    Episode Notes
[“Look What You Made Me Do,” by Taylor Swift]
Trent: Hello everyone and welcome to Pop Chaos, the pop culture podcast. This is our very brief introduction episode, Episode Zero. I am one of your hosts, I am Trent, I am the editor-in-chief of NBN. But I’m not a regular editor-in-chief, I’m a cool editor-in-chief. So this is my – don’t laugh at me. So this is my, yeah, this is where I’m gonna let myself go loose a little bit.
Bailey: I am your other host. I’m Bailey, and I also obviously am on staff here at NBN. I’m a managing editor, but I’ve been here for a really long time. I was entertainment editor for a very long time because I love all things entertainment. Thus, this podcast. And I will also be managing our Twitter this quarter, so look forward to that as well.
Trent: Bailey and I are very, we’re very goofy and silly. We’re in a very goofy and silly mood constantly when we’re together. So, this is just – we’re just going to talk about whatever pop culture because that is all we talk about. Whatever is trending on Twitter, basically, is what we’re going to talk about. Because when we’re together, like in our NBN newsroom, and we need to actually get stuff done, anyone who's on managing NBN staff will tell you we are like the least productive people because we just laugh at each other. It’s bad, it’s not good, so we’re going to let all that energy out here.
Bailey: Honestly, this is just us talking into the void. This is more for us than it is for you or anybody else.
Trent: Finally, to sort of get to know us a little bit better, we decided we’re going to share – what is it, our Spotify Wrapped? Our top artists I think from 2021? Yeah, so Bailey, who is your top artist?
Bailey: My top artist for 2021, and actually for all time – she’s always in my top artists, even when I like exclusively listened to rap music in high school, she was still there. She was still there, every year … is Taylor Swift. It is.
    Trent: Really?
    Bailey: It is.
Trent: I thought you were gonna say, like, Phoebe Bridgers.
    Bailey: I’m an undercover Swiftie.
Trent: My number one is Charli XCX. I like that beep-bop, pots-and-pans, explode-my-eardrums kind of music. My number two is actually Taylor, so maybe I’m also an undercover Swiftie.
Bailey: Yeah, I was gonna say like, when this first came out, I was very confused. I was like, “How – number one? What are you doing here?” But then I realized it’s because frickin’ Fearless (Taylor’s Version) came out and I actually wrote a story for NBN about it. And I talked about how much Fearless means to me. And it came out on my birthday! And I was like, “How did she end up on there?” Like, because I had Red (Taylor’s Version) on my mind because that’s what came out right before this. But no, it was Fearless, and it just like escaped me somehow that I had like been streaming that for like a month straight. So that’s how she got up there.
Trent: No, I definitely saw you like in my Spotify, like in the sidebar, like listening to that. I was like, “I listened to that album once.”
Bailey: I’m very much a Fearless, Speak Now Swiftie, so.
Trent: Do you want to run through your other four real quick?
Bailey: Yeah, yep, yep yep yep. So my other four, um, Phoebe Bridgers, so you were almost right. We’re actually in my room right now, and if you look behind me, there’s a nude poster of her on my wall. So I think that speaks for itself.
    Trent: There is.
Bailey: I love her and three of her songs are also my top songs for the year. And then number three is One Direction. We’re not surprised. Number four is … [clears her throat] Bo Burnham. We’re just gonna move past that real quickly. We’re gonna move past that. I had an Inside phase and I’m not gonna apologize for it. I’m not gonna apologize for it. I’m gonna cry about it a little bit, but I’m not gonna apologize for it. And then for number five, we have Hozie

Solved by Science #5: Why don’t microwave meals fill you up?

    Episode Notes
Sophia and David talk about microwave meals, intermittent fasting and the best stir fry order at Plex East. Content warning: mentions of calorie counting. We recommend talking with a doctor before making any major changes to your diet.

Sophia: Hello, hello, and welcome to Solved by Science, the show where we answer all the questions that keep you up at night. I'm your host, Sophia, and today I have my friend David with me.

David: Hi, I'm David. I am a sophomore studying journalism at Northwestern. I'm an assistant managing editor for North by Northwestern with Sophia, and I'm very excited to have some questions answered. We also co-host another podcast together. It's called Second GenerAsian. It's really cool. You should check it out.

Sophia: It's really great. Listen to us, and also our friend HJY. Anyway, so I'm here to answer one of David's questions.

David: Freshman year, I would eat a lot of microwave meals because you know, I was lazy. I didn't really want to leave the dorm. One thing I noticed is microwave meals and other very cheap food items never really filled me up. I would eat a lot, and it would just feel like my stomach was still empty. I don't know much about how food or science or anything works, but to me, it's like if I'm eating calories, shouldn’t I have the same amount of energy from those calories? I mean, obviously, like you're not getting nutrients, which I might have just answered my own question there. But yeah, I was wondering why don't microwave meals fill me up?

Sophia: Well, we can talk about that more. You did touch a little bit on it. So we can talk about some empty calories and sugars versus complex carbs, that kind of thing. But first, I'm going to talk a little bit about hunger. So, when you feel hungry, that's usually when your blood sugar and insulin levels are dropping. And then that releases ghrelin, which signals hunger. You feel full when you eat, and then your fat cells release leptin to let your body know that you're feeling full. And a lot of this communication happens with the hypothalamus, which is a structure in your brain, and it plays a big role in releasing hormones. Back to your question, why don't microwave meals – or ramen, I guess – fill you up? I'm more of a ramen fan than the microwave meal.

David: Yeah, I mean, they're all in the same wider category to me.

Sophia: They're all the same college student is too lazy

    David: Yeah, exactly.

Sophia: Only has a microwave in their sad CRC dorm room.

    David: Right.

Sophia: Let's start by talking about empty calories. You mentioned that you weren't getting any nutrients. So a lot of these foods, like microwave meals, don't have too much nutritional value, at least the ones I'm eating. I was eating a lot of ramen and mac and cheese last year. What were you eating?

    David: Literally the same thing.

Sophia: Yeah, some things like, I don't know, Trader Joe’s, might have a little bit more.

    David: Doubtful, honestly.

Sophia: But Kraft Mac and Cheese, not it. So these don't have any nutritional value or vitamins, and they're usually full of fat and sugar. So none of that is really great for you. And there's also a difference between sugar and simple carbs versus complex carbs. So simple sugars don't take a lot of time to digest. So things like ramen, mac and cheese. I know you were eating other microwave meals from H Mart.

David: Yeah, I would eat a lot of the Korean like porridge type meals like congee. It was all very similar to me, like in terms of how I would feel afterwards. It's just like not great.

Sophia: So they don't take a ton of time to digest. So what happens is your glucose levels rise super fast, and then when you crash, it makes you feel irritable. So you should eat other things that keep you full for longer because it slows down the absorption of glucose into your bloodstream. So things that keep you full longer: fiber, I'm sure you've heard that before.

    David: Yes.

    Sophia: An
