Kouri Richins Breaks Silence from Jail, Criticizes Prosecutors and Proclaims Innocence

Kouri Richins Breaks Silence from Jail, Criticizes Prosecutors and Proclaims Innocence

Kouri Richins, the Utah mother accused of spiking her husband’s cocktail with a fatal dose of fentanyl, has made her first public comments since her arrest last year. In a series of jailhouse statements provided exclusively to "Dateline" this week, Richins criticized prosecutors, asserted her innocence, and described recent upheaval in the case as “forced.”

Richins, 34, who has been held in the Summit County Jail since a judge denied her bail last year, expressed frustration over being separated from her family. “I’ve been silent for a year, locked away from my kids, my family, my life, living with the media telling the world who they think I am, what they think I’ve done or how they think I’ve lived,” she said. “And it’s time to start speaking up. You took an innocent mom away from her babies. And this means war.”

The comments come after a judge granted her lawyers' request to withdraw from her defense against charges of aggravated murder and other crimes in the death of her husband, Eric Richins, 39, on March 4, 2022. Richins’ lead attorney, Skye Lazaro, cited an “irreconcilable and nonwaivable situation” as the reason for the withdrawal.

In one statement, Richins said she was filled with “great devastation” over her defense team's withdrawal. “My defense team has been forced to withdraw from my case. Represented or not, we all know and should understand there’s only so much I can say. But what I will say is this withdrawal was not my choice. And it was not a personal choice of any counsel on my defense team.”

The withdrawal request was filed the same day Richins’ lawyers asked a judge to disqualify prosecutors due to “severe violations” that compromised their defense and violated Richins’ constitutional right to effective counsel. The filing alleges that from May to December last year, authorities recorded jail calls between Richins and her lawyers without their consent, some of which were listened to by prosecutors.

When defense lawyers discovered the practice and questioned prosecutors, Summit County's top elected prosecutor, Margaret Olson, initially denied awareness. However, lead prosecutor Brad Bloodworth later claimed that one of the defense lawyers had refused to use a phone app that shields attorney-client calls, resulting in the recordings. Bloodworth asserted that prosecutors had not listened to the calls and suggested that by not using the app, the lawyer had seemingly consented to the practice.

Richins accused prosecutors of doing "anything they can to prolong this process and hide their corruption. I will not play into the prosecution’s unconstitutional behavior anymore." She expressed a strong desire to clear her name, stating, “Although I am extremely disappointed where we’re at right now with this case, I’m anxious. I’m anxious to prove my innocence. I’m anxious to get to trial.”

Olson's office responded to the allegations, labeling the defense lawyer's motion to disqualify prosecutors as "materially inaccurate" and "filed in bad faith." The county attorney's office plans to address the motion formally by May 31.

Prosecutors allege that Richins, deeply in debt, fraudulently obtained a nearly $2 million life insurance policy on her husband before giving him a Moscow mule spiked with a lethal dose of fentanyl. They also charged Richins with attempted murder, forgery, and mortgage and insurance fraud.

One year after Eric Richins died, Kouri Richins published “Are You With Me?” a children’s book about grief, dedicated to her “amazing” husband. Despite the charges, Richins and her family have maintained her innocence.

Utah Grief Author, Kouri Richins, Faces Additional Charge of Attempted Murder in Husband's Alleged Poisoning

Utah Grief Author, Kouri Richins, Faces Additional Charge of Attempted Murder in Husband's Alleged Poisoning

Kouri Richins, the Utah author charged with the aggravated murder of her husband Eric Richins, is now facing an additional charge of attempted murder following new allegations of poisoning. Prosecutors claim that Kouri attempted to poison Eric on Valentine's Day 2022 by serving him a sandwich laced with drugs, leading to a severe allergic reaction.

According to charging documents released by the Washington County Attorney’s Office, Eric Richins became gravely ill after consuming the sandwich, experiencing hives and other adverse symptoms. In distress, he contacted friends and expressed suspicion that his wife, Kouri, had attempted to poison him.

"He almost lost me," Eric reportedly told one friend, describing the frightening ordeal after consuming the tainted sandwich. "You could hear the fear in his voice," the charging documents state.

The documents reveal that Kouri Richins had allegedly procured illicit fentanyl prior to the Valentine's Day incident and sought stronger doses following Eric's initial illness. Prosecutors suggest financial motives, pointing to life insurance policies valued at nearly $2 million taken out by Kouri on Eric without his knowledge.

Kouri Richins, who has yet to enter a plea but has denied all allegations, faces a litany of charges, including aggravated murder, mortgage fraud, insurance fraud, and forgery. Her attorney maintains her innocence, stating, "there is nothing in the documents that affects Kouri's approach to defending whatever charges the State levies against her."
A preliminary hearing date has been set for May 15 at the Third District Court.
Kouri Richins remains in custody awaiting trial, while the case continues to unfold, shedding light on the tragic and complex circumstances surrounding Eric Richins' death and the subsequent legal proceedings.

Kouri Richins Faces Fraud Charges Amid Husband's Death Investigation

Kouri Richins Faces Fraud Charges Amid Husband's Death Investigation

Utah resident Kouri Richins, already embroiled in a legal battle over the death of her husband in 2022, faces a new array of charges related to alleged fraud, Court TV reports.

In a startling turn of events, Richins finds herself confronted with two counts of mortgage fraud, two counts of insurance fraud, and three counts of forgery, as revealed in recently obtained court documents.

The saga began last year when Richins faced charges of aggravated murder and other offenses in connection with the untimely demise of her husband, Eric Richins. However, the legal landscape has since expanded, unveiling a web of deceit and financial misrepresentation.

Prosecutors allege that Richins, in a bid to secure financial gain, misrepresented her financial standing in mortgage applications. According to court filings, she purportedly claimed inflated account balances, painting a false picture of financial stability.

In one instance detailed in court documents, Richins allegedly stated a balance of $210,898 in her credit union account when the actual figure stood at a mere $15,609. Another mortgage application reportedly claimed an account balance of $702,831, underlining the extent of the alleged deception.

Further exacerbating the situation, Richins is accused of fraudulently applying for life insurance for her husband and forging his signature. This accusation suggests a calculated attempt to exploit her husband's demise for financial gain.

Authorities assert that Eric Richins met his tragic end due to Kouri Richins' actions, alleging that she administered a lethal dose of illicit Fentanyl, surpassing five times the lethal dosage, effectively ending his life.

The aftermath of her husband's death took a peculiar turn as Richins authored and self-published a children's book on grief. This endeavor, seemingly aimed at providing solace to her three sons, contrasts sharply with the allegations surrounding her husband's untimely demise.

The unfolding legal drama casts a stark light on the complexities surrounding the case, with Richins' actions under scrutiny from both legal and public perspectives.

As the legal proceedings progress, the community remains captivated by the intricacies of the case, eagerly awaiting further developments in the pursuit of justice for Eric Richins and closure for his loved ones.

Richins' journey through the judicial system continues, with the newly levied fraud charges adding layers of complexity to an already convoluted narrative.

Kouri Richins Story: Search Warrant Affidavit Suggests Mother's Possible Involvement in Husband's Death

Kouri Richins Story: Search Warrant Affidavit Suggests Mother's Possible Involvement in Husband's Death

Shockwaves reverberate through the legal sphere as new revelations surface in the high-profile case of Kouri Richins, charged with the murder of her husband, Eric Richins. A recently unsealed search warrant affidavit has shed light on potential involvement by Kouri's mother, Lisa Darden, in what investigators believe could be the planning and orchestration of Eric's untimely demise.

According to court documents obtained by Court TV, Detective Jeff O'Driscoll detailed suspicions surrounding Darden's proximity to a past suspicious overdose death. In 2006, Darden's adult female partner, with whom she shared a romantic relationship, tragically passed away from an oxycodone overdose. Despite having a history of medication abuse, the partner's demise raised suspicions of foul play, especially considering Darden's recent naming as the beneficiary of her estate.

Detectives probing into Kouri and Eric's personal dynamics unearthed a pattern of frequent communication between Kouri and her mother, spanning both personal matters and business dealings. This communication thread forms a critical aspect of the investigation, suggesting a potential nexus between Kouri's actions and her mother's past.

Responding to the State's assertions, Kouri's attorney, Skye Lazaro, staunchly defended Darden, emphasizing the tragic nature of her partner's addiction-related death. Lazaro dismissed allegations against Darden as baseless, asserting that her role as a beneficiary was commonplace and far from indicative of foul play.

"The fact that Ms. Darden's significant other was one of the millions that suffered from, and ultimately succumbed to, opioid addiction is hardly 'suspicious,'" Lazaro stated, challenging the narrative of conspiracy surrounding Darden's involvement.

Despite the defense's rebuttal, the search warrant affidavit underscores the gravity of the investigation, targeting the examination of Lisa Darden's electronic communication devices. Executed on May 4, 2023, the search aimed to unravel potential links between Darden's past and the unfolding tragedy surrounding Eric Richins' death.

As legal proceedings advance and new revelations emerge, the case casts a stark spotlight on the intricate web of familial ties and personal histories entwined within the fabric of a criminal investigation. With each twist and turn, the quest for justice for Eric Richins takes on deeper dimensions, underscoring the complexities inherent in unraveling the truth behind a tangled web of suspicion and accusation.
