Girls Got Game 1: Where We Are and Where We've Been

Girls Got Game 1: Where We Are and Where We've Been

The undergraduate thesis of Riley Fitz.
This book/podcast, Girls Got Game examines incidents of sexism and inequality in the gaming industry—within the games themselves, within the work environment, and within gaming communities. It takes a behind the scenes look at the experiences of high-profile, female video game players, and at how the systems that evolved 80 years ago came to affect the representation of women tech today. In particular, the book/podcast focuses on the representation and characterization of women as they exist within a space traditionally seen as belonging to young, cis-het white males. It addresses the following questions: in what ways are women represented in games? Are women presented as objects or autonomous people? How does the masculine culture of gaming affect the games that are produced? How does the masculine culture of gaming affect the women in the industry? Why is there such a low percentage of female workers in games? When does is a sexualized character okay? What makes a strong female character? Does sexism marginalize a significant portion of the gaming community? Who identifies as a gamer, and is that changing? Girls Got Game establishes that sexism pervades the gaming industry and culture, and while it is slowly receding, the industry still has a long way to go before reaching gender equity.
