Ultra Running for Wellbeing In 2024

Ultra Running for Wellbeing In 2024

Ultra trail running is a new space for me to enter and I am super excited. Why? I keep getting asked, "Why?"

This episode is intended to encourage hope as I share some deep learnings as to "why" I am entering endurance races, at the age of 56. I unexpectedly dug deep into the early experiences of endurance because of adverse childhood abuse experiences and intimate partner violence.

I also revealed how attending Alanon has taught me some important lessons. This amazing social support group facilitated my coming to grips with an understanding that I needed to take care of myself, first and foremost. They reminded me that the actions of others are outside of my control. I did not cause, could not control, nor could I cure anyone’s substance use disorders. After 6 months or so, I finally began the healing process I needed. This, in turn, helped me learn how to support a loved one experiencing substance use issues while detaching myself, motivated by love.

With the understanding that “hurt people, hurt people” I have found the process of forgiveness has helped me heal after years of enduring the actions of others, outside of my control. As someone diagnosed with complex PTSD, I have found that the "forgiveness process" is important to recovery.

The purpose of this episode is to inspire you to take care of yourself, in the event you've put your well-being on hold for one reason or another, like I did without releasing it. This can happen to us humans when our journey results in bumps and stumbles along various paths untraveled. Yes, sometimes we forget our mission and vision during our short voyage here on this planet.

Please feel free to skip this episode that could be triggering for some.

I hope this episode inspires you to move your body in a way that empowers you to show up as your best self every day, as you continue your special journey. You are stronger than anyone knows - perhaps more than you think you are!

Talkin Domestic Violence Awareness, Motherhood, Doulas & Social Connection with Diana Guzman

Talkin Domestic Violence Awareness, Motherhood, Doulas & Social Connection with Diana Guzman

The mystically talented Diana Guzman, treasured momma of 5, trained doula, beloved wife, sister and daughter, professional driver recruiter and advocate, transportation noob, comic book, and anime enthusiast, the legend of Zelda Super Fan, small business owner of The Wild Moon Lotus LLC, and all-around positive energy driven human joins the pod as a new season kicks off.

Diana shared her passion for all things truck driver-related including the significance of relationship-building and maintaining social connections after the on-boarding process! She explained how quick "check-in calls" can change the energy for long-haul drivers in a way that supports wellbeing.

During our conversation, we also explored how expecting moms can celebrate bringing life into the world by having a doula as part of their support team for emotional, spiritual, and physical support. Particularly first-time and young women who might not have strong social support to make the experience less stressful. As a trained doula, Diana shared her lived experiences including how she created a birth plan and how her training empowered her, during her last two pregnancies, as she set birthing expectations. I briefly discussed the fears I experienced, as a teen-age mom, and how having doula support would have benefited my journey into motherhood.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Most cases of domestic violence take place behind closed doors, occurring about every 15 seconds in our county. We opened the curtains and briefly shared how we grew up in environments that included bouts of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. We shared our beliefs about how having open conversations with our children, with others in our circles, and even during the podcast conversation can stop and change the cycles of generational trauma and abuse for future generations. It was through motherhood that found our strength and footing to not only educate and raise that awareness in our lives of our children but to allow our voices to be heard in a way without bouts of judgment flooding the heartfelt, honest conversation we choose NOT to keep hidden as we know we are only as sick as our secrets.

By sharing our stories, we hope listeners will feel stronger and seek support when it comes to their physical, mental, spiritual social, emotional, and occupational well-being.

Domestic violence is never okay, no matter the circumstances. If you or someone you know is in desperate need of help, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1−800−799−7233 or TTY 1−800−787−3224.

Keji Moses Founder of Mayah's Legacy and Maternal Health Advocate

My Special guest this week is the beautiful Keji Moses who joins me to talk about her journey as a mother, wife, and founder of Mayah's Legacy, a charitable organization founded in 2020 that empowers women and families to advocate for their needs as they navigate pregnancy and/or pregnancy loss.

Keji is a lovely human residing in Canterbury, England, in the United Kingdom and shares her story of taking a career break and how that became a defining moment in her life! During this time, she explored what it was like to live in a more balanced way, and she noticed some things that would make her feel healthier and happier as a mom, wife, and supportive person doing amazing work as she facilitates conversations and offers services that matter.

Keji's advocacy focuses on a unique combination of empowerment, intuition, and communication as a way to help rebuild lives in truly authentic ways.

We talk about health and the lessons we learn when our health is compromised, the importance of slowing down and paying attention to our thoughts, and the need to prioritize taking time to practice self-care so we can show up as our best self, in a mindful way, for ourselves, our loved ones, and our teammates as we navigate life's ups and downs in a helpful way.

We talk about weight loss journey struggles and how often we receive unhealthy messaging from society about what a so called "healthy weight" looks like based upon outdated unhelpful metrics!

After this honest conversation I feel a calling to do a full episode sharing my opinions, supported by current research, about outdated thinking and measures of different body types as a way to breakdown stereotypes and perceived ideals of beauty and health!!!!

Anyway, we hope you enjoy this conversation and try some of the tips we share that can help you connect with your mind, body, and spirit for health and healing.
