What ‘Rules’ are holding you back?

Just before I start I still have my little favour to ask if you haven’t filled in my very short questionnaire. so I can make sure i’m creating what you really want and need from my content, services and products.  If you’d like to help a gal out I would be so grateful if you would take a couple of minutes to fill in a super quick couple of questions for me.  The link is in the show notes and in the link in my bio on instagram. That way i’m not making any assumptions and I can help you have the best year yet...whatever it throws at you!

What do you do to look after your own wellbeing?

I’m continuing on my theme of being a bit softer, gentler and kinder to yourself as we ‘softly, softly, catchy monkey’ our way into 2020.

There’s no denying these last 9 months have been weird, bizarre, emotional, scary, sometimes great, sometimes not so much, confusing, a roller coaster, a pressure cooker or WTF IS HAPPENING!

It’s a collective trauma and we need to acknowledge that.

If you haven’t listened to last week's episodes about watching out for the rules we create for yourselves then please go have a listen to that.

The focus of this episode is to help with something I know so many of us are, shall we say...out of practice with.

That’s being kind to ourselves and putting our own wellbeing first.

Something that came through from my ‘what would you like to learn from me’ questionnaire has been that many people really don’t know where to start when it comes to looking after their own wellbeing.

So I thought I'd share a few things to spark some ideas.  Things that I feel are important.

Things that I do myself.  Things I'm only just starting to experiment with.

If you’ve been following me for any amount of time you’ll know that curiosity is one of my core values so because of that, i’m really open minded to trying new things and making up my own mind.

It’s important to state that these are all things that I do because I've researched whether they are right for me so make sure you’re doing your own research because there’s no one size fits all and I'm not a health professional...so do YOUR homework kids!

If there’s anything you want to hear more about then slide into those DMs on Instagram and let me know, I'll bring on an expert and do a wellbeing series for you.

Running a business and personal development/growth go hand in hand.

So I’ll start with my tried and tested ways to look after my own wellbeing.

If you’ve been with me ANY amount of time you’ll know my go to’s already.  I’ve done a few episodes on my routine and I talk about them a lot.

You guessed it.  Journaling and meditation.

I need to be clear, when I started using them in my life I was pretty clueless of the whys and the hows.

I was just committed to researching and finding ways to make them work for ME and fit into my life.

There will always be messages and delivery that don’t really resonate with us.  Please do

What ‘Rules’ are holding you back?

What rules do you have for yourself that are holding you back?

At this time of year it’s really easy to get sucked into doing things you ‘should’ be doing (think resolutions, all the goals, stop drinking, eat healthy etc) or ‘shouldn’t’ be just because the date has changed.

So with this episode I just want to help you to become more aware of these rules.

What if this year we focus less on the ‘have tos’ and focus more on how and who we want to be.

    The rule book has changed.

2020 was a shocker for many.  2021 we’re still in the same place right now.

So why would we add extra pressure in a time where even the most resilient of us are starting to buckle?

    Live this year with consciousness.

What do you want to feel?

Rules are the things we blindly follow in life because there will be consequences if we don’t. So there’s the usual life rules, often with legalities attached that make sense or come from authority!  Those aren’t the rules I'm talking about here.

I’m talking about the internal ‘rules’ that we take on from parents, friends, society, our experiences when we’re young and the ones we just create for ourselves in our own noggins!

The things where we make up stories.

‘If I do this then that happens’.  Or ‘If I don’t do this then that happens, or won’t happen’.

A pretty common one as an example, is this idea that you have to hustle and work hard to be successful.

But the thing is, there are so many nuances just to that statement alone!

What even is hustling?  How hard?  What even is success?  What measures either?

They are unconscious (usually unreasonably high!) standards that we set for ourselves.  And often, other people.

I do really have to watch myself with this and be super conscious because I like rules.  I like order.  I like control and setting rules for ourselves is a way that we can achieve that.

It’s something that creates a sense of safety for me.

My Dad was a teacher and housemaster and my Mum worked in schools too so rules were part of my make up.

Rules can be a good thing IF we allow ourselves to challenge them and be curious about whether they are true and whether they work for us or not.

For example one of my rules now is I don’t have to do things like everyone else to be successful.

So you can see how that could be a good rule to have.

It gives me a lot of freedom.

It allows me to act with curiosity and find the best route forward for me, in line with my values.

It allows me to be on clubhouse and not get sucked in or worry about being left behind.

It’s still a framework that I have for myself, but MUCH more helpful than.

‘I have to do X, Y and Z in my business’ because some guru told me it worked for them and was the ONLY way to run a business.

    But, without t

This week, to kick off the new year, I've got my glorious pal Louise Westra on to expand on some of the things I talk about on the podcast.  From a professional perspective.

We talk 'gut-brain axis'.  We talk about how your low mood might be linked to something totally different to what you think it is.

Louise is passionate about helping women to harness their biology to create the health & resilience they need and deserve for the life they dream of. She wants women to stop settling for mediocre when it comes to their health and the ageing process.

Louise has been a Naturopath for the last 16 years, collaborating with very driven women (and men) to build and then sustain the best health of their life.  This means being consistently energetic, hormonally balanced with an immune system we can rely on.

Not only that but she's living proof that, with the right support as we age chronologically and move up the levels, we can move from dragging ourselves through the day to having a reserve of energy that will allow us a whole other level of vitality and joie de vivre.

During the last 9 years she has been a magazine columnist and featured in The Sunday Times magazine, Conde Nast Traveller, Red, The Sun, The Daily Mail, Psychologies, Glamour, Health & Fitness to name a few and won Tatler awards for retrieving "mojos" and for being the best health "fixer".

When she's not working she can usually be found looking for sunshine, swimming, playing tig with her 11 year old biological son and adopted 5 year old, or chilling with a glass of Menorcan rosé.  Sometimes she even eat chocolate .

In short, she knows her stuff!

I hope this episode helps you look at things a little differently.  Particularly if you've hopped onto the shame train of new years resolutions.  Time for a reframe!

For more, head over to: www.franexcell.com/As I sit here tying up all the loose ends before the festive period I wanted to hop into your inbox with a little message from me to you.

Think of it as my version of the queen's speech...yep...just called myself a queen...if the crown fits! ;-)

My heart goes out to all the people who are feeling lonely this festive period due to the recent announcements around Covid.  And to those who were lonely regardless!

It also goes out to those who are struggling to get ANY alone time and feeling like they want to scream.

It goes out to the people struggling with their relationships and family life.

And those who are revelling in the peace and quiet and feel they can't talk about it.

It goes out to the confused kids.

    The frazzled adults.

Whoever, and wherever you are my heart goes out to you.

You've done SO well this year, even if it may not feel like it right now.

    I mean...

    WOW, what a year!

Unprecedented amounts of trauma (personal and societal), heart ache, confusion, change and uncertainty on a global scale!

But also...joy, stillness, acceptance, gratitude and togetherness.

    There's SO much more!

But my point is, it's really really easy to focus on the bad, particularly when that's what most people talk about online.  We're wired that way through negativity bias too.

    So many emotions!

It's also, completely understandable in a year like 2020!

This weeks content on The Positive Pants Podcast is good timing hopefully:
Hang in there, you're doing so great!

So for me, it's about acceptance of the bad.  Allowing all the feels, being curious of them.  And embracing of the good.

This is a year we'll never forget.

We'll be feeling the repurcussions for years to come.

2021 can be a time for positive change.

But it can also be about slowing down, resting, tuning into yourself and your body.

So don't rush into those New Years resolutions.  90% of people give up by February anyway and use it as a way to beat themselves up even more....but you won't do that will you ;-)

Let's do things differently this year.

    Less focus on the DO.

More focus on the BE and HAVE!

Who do you want to BE?

How do you want to show up for yourself, the people you love, your clients?

What do you want to HAVE in your life?

    How can you get it?

I'm not talking just the material things like 'I want a new car' or 'I want 10 high ticket clients' I'm talking about 'I want to have more fun' or 'I want to have more connection' or 'I want to have more energy'.

    The things that REALLY matter.

What do you truly, truly want, deep down in your soul.

    For you.

Not muddied by other peoples opinions or society, or anything you're telling yourself about what you can and can't have.

    What do you want?

The action is an important piece of the puzzle of course.  But that comes too when you focus on who you're BEING.

We have the power to change the game.  It's up to us.

    So I hope

Hang in there, you’re doing so great

Hang in there, you’re doing so great.

Urgh, what a highly emotional few days we’ve had in the UK.  Across the world too but particularly in the UK.

With the announcement that we won’t be able to mix over Christmas in tier 4 with a few hours notice, emotions are running high.

    Of course they are.

People had got excited about having some sort of normality in this crazy year and it got taken away, and taken away very quickly.

People were going to be seeing family and loved ones. Or being able to hold up some traditions that they value. Exchange gifts.

It may not have been handled in the best way, but we also need to remember we never have the full story of anything.  We will make our own assumptions and come to our own conclusions.

But we are where we are right now.  For me that’s tier 4.

For all the people who are now going to be alone over Christmas my heart breaks for you.

I’m sorry you’re having to go through this but please know you are so much stronger than you think.

I’m so fortunate that we had decided to stay just the two of us (well 3 including Milo) this year so nothing is really changing for us.

We decided early on that we were going to do Christmas in July with my family.

My Dad’s had surgery and is waiting on more treatments so it’s always been the case for me that I'm trying to mix as little as possible so I could see my parents and I accepted that early on.

We’ve got the date in the diary, we’re going to do presents and crackers.

We decided to just shift our perspective on Christmas this year.

I 100% acknowledge how lucky we are.

To be in a beautiful home in the countryside, with each other, with the cosy fire and with the dog.  I feel so incredibly fortunate and grateful for the life we’ve built.

In my opinion I have nothing to feel sad about.  I’m a very pragmatic person.

I look at what’s in front of me, try to see all perspectives and deal with what can be dealt with.

But if I did feel sad, frustrated, angry, or anything else...that wouldn’t be ‘wrong’.  Just because I have it so much better than many others.

You are allowed to feel what you feel.

The good, bad and the ugly.

I always look at things from the point of view of gratitude and perspective.  It’s how my brain is wired.  It didn’t used to be.

I was wired for catastrophising, for feeling like the world was against me.  For feeling like every little thing was the end of the world.

That Fran wouldn’t have handled Covid very well at all so i’m incredibly grateful for the work i’ve done.

I also know first hand how horrible it can feel to be in that place.

    It’s not your fault.

Remember, whoever you are and wherever you are right now.  You’re doing great, keep going.

Whenever something big happens there’s always a lot of noise and opinion.  The anger about a situation gets projected onto other people.

    What’s ‘right’ and ‘wrong’

Time to normalise getting help for your mind

It’s time to normalise getting help and support for your mind.  It’s one of your most precious assets and there is often so much shame around getting help that people just don’t.

It’s the last thing people look at.  Often having spent thousands on strategies, shiny objects and fads, all of which don’t work.

Their money goes on the promise of quick fixes before they feel they have no choice but to ask for help.

    This needs to change.

It’s fundamental to growing your business.  It’s fundamental in life lets be honest!

Whether it’s coaching, mentoring, therapy, counselling, hypnotherapy, NLP, whatever it may be.

You don’t need to stay stuck or in pain.

At some point it’s something the vast vast majority of us deal with. But only a small percentage are open about it.

We need to change the language around anything to do with your mind  too.

Mental health ‘issues’ or ‘problems’.  ‘Struggling’ or ‘suffering’ with mental health.

Feeling the need to hide it when it’s part of how we’re built.

Our unconscious protects us.  ALL of us.  Your mind and body work together to keep you out of perceived danger.

At any one point you could have any or all of the following influencing your behaviour.  Your thoughts and beliefs are experiences and traumas from your childhood, conditioning from your upbringing and environment and culture, unconscious bias, things your parents, teachers, siblings, grandparents, friends said to you, there’s genetics, your particular triggers, the physiological responses you get that trigger your autonomic nervous system.  So you can see it’s actually quite a complex issue.

The majority of people aren’t trained to know this.  So just accept things as the way things are.  But it absolutely doesn’t have to be that way.

All of this can be unpicked.  It doesn’t have to keep you stuck.  But you will stay stuck if you don’t start to at least get curious about what drives your behaviour.

There are SO many options out there to make this WAY easier than doing it on your own. Trust me, that’s what I did and it took a long time and a lot of trial and error.  You’ve got counselling, therapy, coaching, mentoring, EMDR, IFS, Hypnotherapy, NLP, Heartmath and countless other modalities available to you.  If it wasn’t something that a huge number of people struggled with, these wouldn’t exist, so I can guarantee you you’re not on your own.

In other cultures it’s just as normal as going to the gym.  Think of it as a workout for your mind.

There is no shame.  There is no weakness.  It’s just another form of communication.  Allowing yourself to communicate internally, with yourself, with your emotions, your body, your mind.
