The SWIFT project acknowledges the growing need for new approaches to effective laboratory-based learning, where issues of space, time and resources lead to pedagogical limitations in the use of practical classes involving student engagement in pre-designed experiments. It addresses these limitations by developing laboratory activities in Second Life, researching their impact on teaching and learning in biomedical sciences, and thereby providing exemplars for transfer to other sciences.

SWIFT Part 2 - Experimenting in the Virtual Genetics Laboratory
The SWIFT project at the University of Leicester (Second World Immersive Future Teaching) has created a virtual genetics lab within the three-dimensional, virtual world of Second Life, to help students studying genetics and biological science. Phase two of SWIFT uses this virtual lab to help first year medical students learn the process of genetic testing. In this video, Dr Paul Rudman describes the virtual lab, its purpose, features and effectiveness, while Dr Suzanne Lavelle demonstrates the physical lab alternative.
