    How To Enjoy The Delight And Mitigate The Danger Of Sugar

    In this episode look at our physical wellness, as our bodies are the vehicle that houses everything we drive toward. Few things drive our appetites like…sugar. We see sugar as a gift and honor it like we honor wine. And like wine, it’s probably not best to have it in excess. For the greater span of time, humans went most of their lives with little to no sugar outside of the occasional fruit when it was in season. In America it wasn’t until around 1619 when sugarcane came on the scene. Today sugar is added to everything. The American Heart Association recommends up to 25 grams, or 6 teaspoons per day. Though the average American consumes 88 grams, about 22 teaspoons a day. What’s best for our physical health? Today, 1 in every 3 Americans has diabetes or prediabetes. Another way to look at it, around 122 million Americans have a sugar related disorder, while only 14 million have an alcohol disorder. We are sicker and bigger than ever and sugar is the primary culprit. In this episode I’m joined by Randy James, medical doctor and Functional Medicine expert and we talk about how to best view and manage sugar. Something again, we love too! And work to manage in regards to our wellness desires.

    Reconcile Being Enough Now & Also Wanting To Be More

    In this episode I address our drive to improve. If you didn’t have that drive, you wouldn’t be listening now. You want to improve. Better yourself. And the point is getting better results from your life and more joy and fulfillment in your soul. Yet we can fall into the trap of striving and striving and never being ok with ourselves right now. As we humans tend to do, we polarize and are prone to constantly, exhaustively pushing to improve and often just being disappointed in ourselves and frustrated with our slow progress, or we just throw our hands in the air and ask if we can just be ok as we are! Is there a happy medium? A place of growth and peace? A quest for improvement and contentment? Of course I’m going to make a case there is, but it’s a perspective I must keep revisiting myself as I’m prone to the extremes as well. Let’s talk about the delicate balance.

    I want to help you, and me, be aware that our brain is programmed to take everything that happens during our day, every source of input, and immediately run it through a filter of self-protection. And we don’t get our authentic selves from it. I saw a post recently that said “Awakening is not changing who we are, but discarding who we are not.” Our natural, self-protective selves are not our authentic selves. The point, much of our drive, in everything, everyday, is self-protection. This is not a true, strong, positive, productive and progressive drive. It’s like driving with your parking brake on. I have a story for you to help give you some freedom.

    Navy SEAL Leader Rich Diviney | How To Understand & Leverage The 25 Attributes That Drive Your Optimal Performance

    I've forever had my paradigm shifted with a new category of attributes. What are attributes? They are inherent qualities you possess. We all do. And they inform everything we do. Here is the story. Rich Diviney spent 20 years as a Navy SEAL, completing more than a dozen overseas deployments, eleven in Iraq and Afghanistan. He went on to be intimately involved in a specialized SEAL selection process to look for elite performers amongst the already elite SEAL members. He found himself often surprised by which candidates washed out and which succeeded. So often someone with all the right skills would fail, while others he might have initially dismissed would turn out to be the best performers. This led Rich to research and discover hidden drivers of performance. Attributes which will often predict how we will perform, especially under pressure. I read through Rich's book, The Attributes: 25 Hidden Drivers of Optimal Performance. Then I took his Attributes quiz. We started off with what drove him to pursue being a Navy SEAL. Then discussed how attributes differ from skills, and in truth, eclipse them. Then we walked through all 25 attributes and I'm confident you'll hear brand new perspectives on attributes like courage, situational awareness, task switching, cunning and even narcissism which he says has a place in top performance.     As your body is the physical vehicle for all you do here on earth, this episode is about having it in great working order. As we continue to look at the best foods to fuel our bodies, we now turn to fat. Most of grew up where fat was the enemy, so everything went to no fat or zero fat and we Americans got…fatter. As quoted by the NCBI, National Center for Biotechnology Information: The prevalence of obesity changed relatively little during the 1960s and 1970s, but it increased sharply over the ensuing decades—from 13.4% in 1980 to 34.3% in 2008 among adults and from 5% to 17% among children during the same period. Then...the national adult obesity rate has increased by 26 percent since 2008 and today the U.S. adult obesity rate stands at 42.4 percent, the first time the national rate has passed the 40 percent mark. No fat has made us fat. Now let me clarify; a pint of Ben & Jerry’s is 16 oz, and if I have it, I eat it all. The whole pint. A pint of Chubby Hubby has 1,320 calories and 80g of fat. A 16 oz slab of salmon has 944 calories and 59g of fat. However that Ben & Jerry’s Chubby Hubby also packs in 140g of sugar and the salmon has zero. The fat you want is from fish, meat, olives, avocado, seeds and nuts, and some dairy...but not the Ben & Jerry’s kind. Stay tuned and we’ll help you decipher what fast will serve you best.
