From air pollution to smoking, which risk factors contribute the most to health loss?

Understanding the relationship between risk factors and health outcomes is key to improving health and developing evidence-based policy. The latest Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) uses innovative new methods to analyze risk factors to health in more than 200 countries. Disparities in disease burden between males and females

Disparities in disease burden between males and females

Males and females have unique health concerns that grow over time. Females show higher rates of health loss from conditions including depressive disorders, anxiety, Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Males show higher rates of health loss from cardiovascular, respiratory, and liver diseases. The latest Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) looks at trends across regions and age groups and highlights the need for specific strategies to address these challenges. We discuss the data with study authors IHME Researcher Gabriela Fernanda Gil and Dr. Vedavati Patwardhan of the University of California, San Diego.

Why PEPFAR matters, with Dr. Anthony Fauci

Why PEPFAR matters, with Dr. Anthony Fauci

PEPFAR has saved more than 25 million lives and provides funding for AIDS treatment and education programs across Africa and into Asia and the Americas. But the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief faces new uncertainty in terms of long-term financial support. Traditionally funded for five years at a time, the program has recently been funded on only an annual basis. A government scientist under seven presidents, Dr. Anthony Fauci was a leading AIDS researcher in the early 1980s and is one of the architects of PEPFAR. In this episode, he joins health economist Dr. Angela Apeagyei of IHME to discuss the importance of this lifesaving program.

We are facing a low-fertility future

We are facing a low-fertility future

The world is facing a low-fertility future. By 2050, more than three-quarters of countries will not have fertility rates high enough to sustain population size over time. The latest Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) looks at past and future trends, which have major implications for societies and economies. We discuss the fertility research with Dr. Austin Schumacher, one of the study’s authors.
