Today, September 21, marks the 48th anniversary of Marcos’ declaration of martial law, and we have a special podcast episode highlighting the transnational activism of Filipinos in fighting the dictatorship, as well as first hand testimonies of activists and cultural workers who spent their youth resisting Marcos’ tyranny. We invite you to sit with and internalize this history and first hand accounts of what it meant to struggle against Marcos during martial law and reflect on the power of transnational resistance as we continue our fight against President Rodrigo Duterte's fascism and state terror. As the chant popularized during the Marcos era goes, Makibaka, huwag matakot! Join the struggle, do not be afraid!

To remember the blood, sweat, tears, and resistance of the Filipino people under Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos, we reflect on what martial law under Marcos was, and the ways in which history rhymes and repeats today under the repression of president Rodrigo Duterte. Malaya Movement Northeast is releasing two new podcasts this September on the 14th and 21st for “Malaya Mondays,” reflecting on Marcos’ martial law era.  For today’s episode, we will explore the history of martial law under Marcos, and draw parallels and connections to today under Duterte.

Why have there been large scale protests against the new Anti-Terror Law in the Philippines and even protests around the world? What does it mean for the diaspora and our allies? What can you do? 

This pilot episode examines questionable and concerning provisions in Republic Act 11479, or the Anti-Terror Act of 2020 (ATA), that threaten the human rights and democratic liberties of the Filipino people. We’ll cover particular provisions that allow the ATA to target non-citizens in the Philippines and have extraterritorial applications that may extend to Filipino Americans and immigrants—as well as non-Filipino critics abroad—who speak out against President Rodrigo Duterte's government. The Malaya Movement rises with the Filipino people to resist Duterte's dictatorship.
