    SPAR's continued although the operating settings were difficult, SPAR's ongoing operations had a mixed performance. The Group's ongoing operations in South Africa, Ireland, South West England, and Switzerland had a 7.9% growth in turnover, amounting to R77.2 billion. Inflationary cost pressures and persistently high interest rates have put strain on businesses and consumers alike in all regions. Considering the difficult operating conditions, continuing operations produced a mixed performance. The Group's ongoing operations in South Africa, Ireland, South West England, and Switzerland had a 7.9% growth in turnover, amounting to R77.2 billion. Inflationary cost pressures and persistently increasing interest rates have put pressure on businesses and consumers alike in all regions. Angelo Swart, CEO of Spar Group, talks with host Bruce Whitfield to provide further information. 
    The Johannesburg High Court ruled that renowned law firm Edward Nathan Sonnenberg Inc. (ENS) was culpable for the woman's fall victimization to a common cybercrime known as "business email compromise" (BEC), and that the firm was ordered to pay the woman R5.5 million plus interest in addition to her legal fees. However, the Supreme Court of Appeal reached a different decision this week, sustaining ENS's appeal against the six-month-old ruling. Judith Hawarden's claim was dismissed by the SCA along with two attorneys' fees. Our consumer ninja Wendy Knowler speaks with host Bruce Whitfield to shed more light on the situation.

Currently, over 8 million households in South Africa benefit from the free basic electricity (FBE) program, receiving 50 kWh per month. At the end of May, Nersa approved a new rate for FBE, which municipalities must pay Eskom for supplying this free power. Starting July 1, the rate for the 2024/25 municipal financial year will be 194.40c/kWh, a 12.5% increase from the previous rate of 172.76c/kWh.
