The Johannesburg High Court ruled that renowned law firm Edward Nathan Sonnenberg Inc. (ENS) was culpable for the woman's fall victimization to a common cybercrime known as "business email compromise" (BEC), and that the firm was ordered to pay the woman R5.5 million plus interest in addition to her legal fees. However, the Supreme Court of Appeal reached a different decision this week, sustaining ENS's appeal against the six-month-old ruling. Currently, over 8 million households in South Africa benefit from the free basic electricity (FBE) program, receiving 50 kWh per month. At the end of May, Nersa approved a new rate for FBE, which municipalities must pay Eskom for supplying this free power. Starting July 1, the rate for the 2024/25 municipal financial year will be 194.40c/kWh, a 12.5% increase from the previous rate of 172.76c/kWh.
