Minor Prophets Major Messages: Zephaniah - Wrath and Mercy

Zephaniah was a minor prophet with a major message, one of wrath and mercy. The prophet warned Israel of the destruction of the world and how they might avoid it. He gave them hope and a reason to rejoice despite the coming wrath, for there would also be Yahweh’s mercy.

119 teachings have created a desire in me to study, question and compare
Such plain open truth that gives me no choice but to dig deeper into the Bible, our current state and praying for truth to take root in me!
So many treasures to seek and find!

Shepard’s to those who know they’re lost

My journey started during a trip to Israel thanks to some trouble at the Jordanian boarder that put my betrothed and I on an impromptu religious sightseeing tour.

We got to see where Jesus stood and taught, got to see a stone image of the actual ark of the covenant. We hit all the spots and it was cool but I didn’t think there was anything especially powerful about the trip. In-fact it wasn’t until just now that I remembered that I had prayed on the western wall. I felt more than a little odd wearing board shorts, flip flops and a guest yamaka, all the while surrounded by Orthodox Jews, dressed to the T of what I’d imagine Jesus would wear. I didn’t know what to pray for, so I asked God to help me love him better. I viewed it all as a nice treat but nothing particularly special. When we got home, my hard core atheist fiancé randomly asked what I’d think if she got a NIV and we started reading it every night. I was pleased if not outright shocked to hear her request. We’ve since then mapped out our reading schedule and we will finish the last page of the Bible the night before our wedding.

Having grown up Mormon the idea of God has always been with me, but I just couldn’t find him with free mason hand shakes or the constant pledging to an organization and it’s founder. Eventually I walked away and gave up on finding God, though my heart always yearned for him, I just didn’t know how to connect with Him.

That all changed after I found out about God’s holy days, all these commandments I had never heard of, etc. I told my fiancé “unless God or Jesus ends up explicitly saying that we aren’t supposed to do this stuff any more, I‘m gonna start doing it.”

I earnestly started asking everyone and anyone if they knew of any scripture that said God’s laws no longer applied. No one had any real answer for me and after exhausting all known sources of clarity, I finally made the choice to start following God, and in a way I had never done before.... His way.

I felt so alone, no one cared about what God said, or what Jesus taught, it was all about their churches. I decided I would go it alone if need be, maybe I could convince a local rabbi to let me celebrate God’s holy days with them. I had know idea what I was doing, though I was trying my best.

Eventually I ran into a YouTube video of some preacher telling me how wrong the Hebrew Roots guys were. Nearly everything he claimed was wrong, felt just the opposite to me. What did feel wrong was his attempts to justify his beliefs via mental backflips and all the while ignoring the plain language in the Bible. This led me to search out they people he was critiquing.

That’s how I found 119 ministries and they’ve rocketed my learning of God’s will like I could have never done on my own. I know we aren’t supposed make them our covering, and I hope I’m not doing that, but their insights and intellectually honest approach to scripture has empowered me to better love God, deeper and truer than I’ve ever experienced before.

My fiancé and I continue our nightly reading, but even then, I’m no biblical scholar and it’s nice to have someone help bring all the concepts together in a deep meaningful way. Before 119, I was using the Bible Project and their animations to get a better grasp of overarching themes of each book and how it related to the next. Their products were awesome but everything was taught through the lens of a catholic splinter group and many if not all my questions remained a mystery

119 is the only “church” (I don’t think that’s what they actually are) that has never asked me to do mental gymnastics or have faith in men. 99% of everything they put out leaves me thinking, wow, that totally makes sense!!! Apparently God isn’t supposed to be confusing, who knew.

A warning to those just now joining the new covenant. Jesus wasn’t kidding when he said following him was going to rip families apart, I can’t believe the outpouring of hate I’ve experienced by people I once thought to be sheep. Even my own fiancé threatened at one point to leave me if I didn’t “give up all this God stuff”. Picking up the cross is a real thing, just stay true, stay on course, eventually only the people who actually love you will be left in your life. This isn’t a bad thing, it’s a blessing, have faith.
