#42: Scent in Palliative and End of Life Care with Madeleine Kerkhof An Aromatic Life

    • Society & Culture

In this episode, Frauke sits down with Clinical Aromatherapist Madeleine Kerkhof to discuss the role that our sense of smell, and scents, can play in oncology, palliative (incl. dementia and Alzheimer's), and end of life care. Madeleine shares her journey that led to the work that she does now, why she believes integrative care should be the true focus of health care (and not sick care), and why we need to focus on the needs of the individual person as much as possible. Madeleine also shares how she approaches using scent as support for those with dementia and Alzheimer's, and offers some tips as to what you can (safely) do at home to help. This is an important conversation that sheds light on the wonderful ways our sense of smell, and scents, can play an integral role in providing safety, comfort, and calm even in the most difficult circumstances, and most painful moments in life.

Note: please only use essential oils and CO2 extracts on the most vulnerable if you are trained to do so. Essential oils are highly concentrated substances that need to be used with the utmost safety in mind. Thank you.
