Update From Brazil
People living in southern Brazil, already dealing with the destruction of heavy flooding, were hammered again with torrential rain in the past week with more devastation forecast for the coming days. Paulo Andrave, a Brazilian artist and social commentator visiting the Madison area joins host Tony Castañeda of the Thursday 8 O’Clock Buzz to talk about the deadly flooding but also about the political situation in the country. The former President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, led a government that was anti-environment and pro-business that coupled with climate change has resulted in devasting consequences for the Brazilian people. Extensive deforestation undertaken to promote new development has exacerbated the effects of flooding.

All Craft On Tap
WORTstock 2024 is this Sunday, May 19, and once again Madison Homebrewers and Tasters Guild is sponsoring the beverage selection on tap at the festival. Fred Swanson of the Guild joins host Tony Castañeda of the Thursday edition of the 8 O’Clock Buzz to discuss this year’s lineup of beverages and the state of brewing in the Madison area. There will no less than sixteen beverage selections on tap at any one time at the event, with different options rotating in and out as supplies last. There will be only one new brewery featured this year which reflects the slight downturn in craft beer sales nationwide. So, get over to Warner Park this Sunday, enjoy a beverage or two, and support this most worthwhile fund-raising event with other like-minded community members.

Ian Karmel, Comedian, Author and Now, 8 O’Clock Buzz Guest!
Karmel, who for many years relied on his girth for comedic material, recently shed enough weight to make his self-deprecating “fat jokes” (as he calls them) irrelevant, forcing him to develop new material without the aid of his long-time comedic crutch. He and his sister have co-written a memoir about their lives, “T-Shirt Swim Club“, about their lives, which they hope can speak to kids who may be experiencing some of what they did as teens.
Karmel also hosts the weekly podcast All Fantasy Everything, where comedians and experts come together to fantasy draft anything and everything pop culture-nothing is off limits.

Honor a Nurse, Save a Life Blood Drive
National Nurses Week, May 6-10, 2024, honors those who are the guardians of our care in clinics, hospitals, and the community. Victoria Gutierrez, a local nurse and labor activist, talks with Thursday 8 O’Clock Buzz host Tony Castañeda about the role of nurses as listeners, explainers and advocates, as well as their ongoing struggle to organize and the long-lasting detrimental effects of Act 10, which decimated their union.
In recognition of National Nurses Week 2024, Meriter Nurses along with SEIU, the union representing healthcare workers, are hosting a community-wide blood drive on Friday, May 10, 2024 from 9am – 1pm at the Labor Temple at 1602 S. Park St. Walk-ins are welcome!
