- Society & Culture
Today, we are sitting down with the founder of Cape-able Consulting (@iamcapeable) Alexandra Gilbert to share her story of what it was like growing up having both dyslexia and ADHD, and how it can affect your adulthood.
Throughout the episode, we talked about her diagnosis, what it's like to function having a learning disability in your 20s and in your adulthood, and how you can be more communicative in the workplace. We also touch on Capable Consulting, a consulting firm for adults who are diagnosed with a learning disability.
Dyslexia, ADHD, and learning disabilities are far more common than people think. And sometimes it’s left undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, leaving people with these learning disabilities unaware and lost. But identifying your disabilities can actually help you live a more functional and productive life.
In this episode:

What is dyslexia and what's ADHD?
Three types of ADHD
Some people mask their disabilities, and 60% of them lose their jobs
The challenges she went through in grade school was the root of her anxiety
In college, Alex developed a program that help students with all kinds of disabilities navigate through campus
During her first job, Alex didn’t have the support she needed which led her to depression, anxiety, and panic attacks.
In the last decade, she spent working in programming, leadership development, and switching into helping people who needed it the most
Alex learned a lot but also made a lot of mistakes in her first job.
Her dyslexia and ADHD made her unique
People with mental issues who are acknowledged by doctors and professionals are protected by ADEA or American Disability Act
Acknowledge what your needs are to make sure that you are doing the job to the best of your ability

It’s typical for people with dyslexia and ADHD to be entrepreneurs
The two parts of Cape-able Consulting are coaching and providing support
There have been ups and downs in the business but working for herself made her feel more relaxed and more productive
