    NEURONS - EP 6 KATHERINE

    NEURONS - EP 6 KATHERINE

The final episode of Neurons, the batch of A Year from Now episodes dealing with mental stuff, is about a woman named Katherine. She suffered from intrusive thoughts, auditory hallucinations and command hallucinations but finally she was found a treatment that offered some hope. ECT, electro convulsive therapy.

Along with those challenges she had a hidden shame, a secret she needed to get off her chest and it just so happened that a week before our first interview she did just that. Everything was looking up. How did things turn out? A year from now? It's heartbreaking but one of the more important and beautiful episodes covered so far on this show.

    NEURONS - EP 5 ABU

    NEURONS - EP 5 ABU

My friend Abu can be frustrating because he has all these ideas of how he'll change the world, and he has in small ways, but that's not enough. He has a kind of all-or-nothing state of mind. Saving the world sounds similar to gambling, if he's got one lifetime, one hand to play, better go all in, anything less would be a waste. This, IMO, hasn't been working.

When I first interviewed him, it had been a couple years since he quit his job and, by my calculations, he was running out of money. You'd think it's not too hard to get a job but Abu has other mental things going on and the possibly of homelessness was a real concern for me. For Abu, not so much, which only made me more worried.

    NEURONS - EP 4 SAM

    NEURONS - EP 4 SAM

Sam walks us through what disassociating feels like. It's hauntingly similar to many daily events: day dreaming, commuting home and finding yourself not fully conscious of the ride, getting lost in thought about what you wish you would have said to that jerk that did something jerky to you. Take these normal events but then inflate them till squeeze out all other forms of thought and living. Pretty debilitating.

in 2020 he, in a sense, returned to the scene of the crime. He was forced home after during the pandemic, living in a barn behind his parents home, and took up the challenge of dealing with the abuse, childhood and clinical malpractice as he tells it, head on. Did it work?

A year later we find out. Spoiler... it kind of worked.

    NEURONS - EP 3 DIDI

    NEURONS - EP 3 DIDI

Not really part of the Neurons batch of episodes, sorry. We had a full length episode planned to release but something came up that prevented that, so here's a short piece about my friend and coworker Didi.

Didi is a bubbly fun loving man who works all the time and has a lot of responsibilities but, ironically, makes me feel like guilty about the fact that I don't work all the time and have barely any responsibilities. He's had a long journey to earn his happiness, which helps me appreciate mine.

    NEURONS - EP 2 DEVIN

    NEURONS - EP 2 DEVIN

*This episode deals with various forms of abuse that can happen in a relationship.*

Devin is a twenty something in Gainsville Texas and he's got problems. A drinking problem, an OCD problem, and the problems that come with those problems. Many people on this show are strong people dealing with something a normal person might not be able to handle (or more accurately, how normal people are revealed to be quite strong after life throws them a challenge.) but Devin's problems, the oppression of his OCD, is on a different level.

This show can be inspiring, but isn't meant to be inspiration... this episode in particular doesn't deliver too much warmth. It's rough. But there's truth in it and I appreciate have the chance to talk with Devin.

    NEURONS - EP 1 AMIN

    NEURONS - EP 1 AMIN

Amin often felt like he was in a video game, or that he was the only one that existed. That the world was either unreal or too real.

When Amin first talked with me he was cooling off from a difficult year. His dad died, he was deported due to a mental crisis, and he was living in Saudi Arabia with his family but away from his friends. How will he be doing a year from now? Will his distortions of reality come back? Will he make friends? And what do we miss when we focus on the most extreme parts of a person?
