Eric Stern: The Big SCOTUS Decision & How It Can Affect Any Frum Jew
The Supreme Court just ruled a very important law and it clearly impacts Klal Yisroel.
Gerald Groff, a Christian postal worker, was fired for refusing to work on Sundays, his Sabbath day. Groff sued the USPS, arguing that the agency had violated his religious freedom by not accommodating his request to not work on Sundays. The Supreme Court ruled in Groff's favor, holding that employers must show that the burden of granting a religious accommodation would result in substantially increased costs in relation to the conduct of their particular business.
The Court found that the USPS had not met this burden, as it could have accommodated Groff's request by reassigning him to a different route or by allowing him to swap shifts with other employees. The Groff decision clarified the standard that employers must meet to deny religious accommodations to their employees. The Groff decision is a victory for religious freedom in the workplace.
