When Afrikka Hardy was strangled in 2014 it seemed completely random, but it wasn’t. It was part of a pattern.
Four years earlier, reporter Thomas Hargrove had created an algorithm to detect serial killers and flagged Gary, Indiana as the site of an unusual number of strangulations.
But when Hargrove reached out to warn local police, he was ignored -- until Afrikka Hardy was murdered, and those cold cases suddenly didn’t look so cold.
Algorithm follows the investigation into Afrikka’s murder, exposing the warnings that police ignored, and uncovering more than anyone expected -- that a serial killer was strangling women in Gary, Indiana could've been stopped. And that Afrikka Hardy should be alive today.
This podcast will explore how technology can be used to identify and track serial killers, and how an algorithm can influence the way homicides are investigated all across the country.

Thomas Hargrove discusses the creation of the algorithm and Dr. Mike Aamodt talks serial killing stats. Finally, host Ben Kuebrich receives an unexpected phone call.

Customer Reviews
Decent but the dragging words
This podcast is really well done and is quite an interesting story. However, the way the host drags every other word drives me a bit crazy and I end on focusing on that rather than the story sometimes. For example, Hargrooooove, Killeeeeeer, Caaaaaaaases, etc. A guy at work talks in a similar fashion and it has made me avoid conversations with him.
Great content, new information!
Love this podcast and the story it tells about people and the coming of age in using data to help solve crimes driven largely by patterns in behavior. To the people harping on Ben’s voice. Get a grip, people have unique voices.
Ugh! The host… I can’t listen anymore
I got to the fourth episode and as good as the story is, I simply can’t listen to this host drone on with no inflection in his voice, a steady and monotonous single tone. It’s like someone humming the same note nonstop. Nothing to hold your attention. Makes a potentially good story so incredibly boring. I believe the host said he’s usually a producer or researcher, but decided to record this podcast. That was an unfortunate decision.
