Avoiding Takeoff Emergencies with Flying Magazine’s Rob Mark
Max talks with Flying Magazine’s Rob Mark about minimizing takeoff risks. Per the NTSB, 26% of fatalities occur during takeoff, so pilots need to plan for what they’ll do if things don’t go well during the takeoff. Engine failure can occur, but a partial power loss is three times more likely than a complete engine failure. Rob also shares a long list of tips for avoiding takeoff emergencies.
Thirty Ways to Save Money on Flight Training, PilotEdge’s SimVenture 2021 + GA News
A young listener shares 30 ways to save money on flight training and interviews a Corporate pilot about how he was able to become a pilot and fly professionally. Also, Max talks with Kevin Meyers of PilotEdge about SimVenture 2021, an online event in July that will let pilots and flight simmers practice flying into AirVenture in Oshkosh using real FAA controllers and realistic scenery.
King Air 350 Crash Analysis with Seth Lake + GA News
Max talks with Seth Lake about the NTSB’s probable cause for a King Air 350 crash that killed ten people. There were a series of errors. The pilots did not call for any of the takeoff checklists or discuss what to do if an engine lost thrust on takeoff. The pilot responded to the emergency with left rudder input, the opposite action of what the emergency called for.
AOPA on Warbirds Adventures Case and its Impact on CFIs, Cirrus Safety Award + GA News
Max talks with AOPA General Counsel Justine Harrison and Jared Allen about the impact of the Warbirds Adventures Case on Flight Instruction. The immediate impact is if you provide instruction for compensation in a limited category aircraft, you need an FAA exemption. The FAA has been asked to interpret how the decision affects other flight instruction. Max receives Cirrus 2020 Safety Award.
Nine Lessons from Cirrus Midair Collision over Denver
Max talks with pilot Eric Gundersen, who created a video that shows some of the factors that led to a midair collision between a Cirrus SR22 and a Metroliner at Centennial airport in Colorado. The factors identified could apply to any aircraft type and serve as a cautionary tale for all pilots.
What Pilots Need to Know about Hearing Loss – Dr. Greg Van + GA News
Max talks with Dr. Greg Van about how hearing loss affects people and the many ways that pilots and others can permanently damage their hearing. Hearing loss can also lead to depression, insomnia and high blood pressure. Exposure to noise above 85 dBA causes damage. Even driving with the window down exceeds that level. Pilots and ramp workers need to protect their hearing even when walking around.
