Non-musical history for today: 1774 – Rhode Island became the first of Britain's North American colonies to ban the importation of slaves.  But, did they outlaw what was already there? Probably not at that juncture.

Non-musical history for today: 1509 – Henry VIII of England married Catherine of Aragon. Yep. She was the OG, the original, the one that started it all, the first, numero uno! The marriage was eventually annulled in 1533 after Hank assumed dominion over the church in England (which led to the CoE, by the way). She died of cancer three years later. Hank wanted a divorce because she wasn't producing any male heirs, and there was no precedence for a female monarch. Her daughter, Mary, however, became the first full-fledged Queen Regnant (meaning the sovereign equivalent to a king).

Non-musical history for today: 1935 – Dr. Robert Smith took his last drink, and Alcoholics Anonymous was founded in Akron, Ohio, United States, by him and Bill Wilson. The Bill Wilson part is where the term "Friends of Bill W." came from.

Non-musical history for today: 1949 – George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four was published. Perhaps people don't realize how close this is to happening right now. Big Brother is watching you, you know?
