Beyond BTown is a behind the scenes look at the people, places and stories that help make Bloomington 'Unique' ... where we sit down with notable alumni, former student-athletes, coaches past and present, as well as community dignitaries for an in-depth chat about Bloomington and its impact on them; how they got here, what it was like for them while on campus and around town and lastly, what they're up to now after they've moved on from the 812. These are anecdotes and adventures you might not know about; along with the tales you've come to know and love.
Your host hails from the West Side of Monroe County and has called Bloomington home since a return from the Windy-City, Chicago in 2004; Most of you likely know him best as DJ Unique - the first ever Gameday DJ and Audio Consultant for IU Athletics where he worked directly with the IU Men's and Women's Basketball from 2012 to 2017 and with IU Football from 2011 to 2018. Currently he hosts Wired 97 on Bloomington's B97 and he's created and hosts one of the biggest bar events Bloomington has seen in quite some time : Music Video Bingo;
IDS kids - this weeks guests are for you!!
These two proudly claim 'The Region' as home base in their formative years; where an early love of David Letterman Top 10 lists and performing with family members would help sculpt and sharpen a strong sense of humor.
That innate, natural ability to make people laugh would serve both very well in their writing. From Crown Point and stints on the school newspaper, both pursued degrees at Ernie Pyle School of Journalism.
Pouring into their assignments at the IDS while on campus, that experience gained would help springboard both into careers in print media, multi-media, social media and freelance writing.
The eldest (Jeff) has freelanced a stories and interviews with A-list celebrities for some of the largest, well-known magazines in the industry. The youngest (Dave) took his sense of humor/wit, at the dawn of Twitter in 2009, created a handle and would eventually find himself working for various leagues in the world of Motorsports ...
They're also, literally, family ... my cousins(through marriage), are two of the best at what they do and it's my pleasure to share their long, strange Jimmy Buffet laced trip with you all.
From the Class of 1997 and 2000 ... here are Jeff & David Vrabel
Cody Sharrett - United States Soccer Federation
Our guest today calls Chicago home by way of Fortville, Indiana.
He's a 2012 graduate of the Sports Communications department where he worked alongside IU Men's Soccer and IU Volleyball while here on campus; Rumor has it he scored a much ballyhooed 50 yard dash victory over current IU Public Address announcer Jeremy Gray and in 2011 had an in depth scout with then IU baseball coach Tracy Smith about a hard-hitting lefty from Ohio who, according to Smith, 'should provide us a little pop in the lineup next year.'
Post graduation he found work in the MLS and then out in Portland & Minneapolis respectively, where we spent time making folks laugh for the NBA's Trailblazers and Timberwolves ... he just returned from a trip to Qatar, where he covered the 2022 Men's World Cup for the United States; And on Monday, he boarded a plane for New Zealand with the US Women's National team.
He is the Social Media Manager for the United States Soccer Federation and we're thrilled to have him on the podcast; help us welcome Mr Cody Sharrett.
Chuck Crabb - IU Basket Ball Announcer for 46 years
Today's guest on Beyond-Btown hails from West Central Indiana, and a small town nestled in the Northwest corner of Clay County. He and his wife now call Florida home, but for just shy of 50 years - he was(and still is) an Indiana Hoosier through and through.
As a young man, he would find himself working in print journalism in Brazil, IN and in Terre Haute; There, chance would have it, he'd cross paths with the future broadcast voice of Indiana Athletics, Don Fischer. Fast forward a few years and one of those rare, life-altering opportunities would present itself in the form of a makeshift audition at a high school basketball game, where the then Assistant A.D. for IU was in attendance, Mr. Ralph Floyd.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Our guest for Episode (3) of Beyond BTown with DJ Unique, is none other than Mr Chuck Crabb
Brice Fox and Daniel Weber
So a Chicagoland IU legacy and a homegrown Cutter walk into a bar; or, in this case, the IU Auditorium...
What started out on stage at BMOC as a mutual respect and kinship for their respective talents, would lead to an idea to tweak and remix the schools iconic fight song. Little did they know - that creative spark would change the career arc of expectations for these two as their entire lives ahead of them.
And so began a decade+ friendship and working collaboration that would eventually see them leave Bloomington to launch careers in the music industry - one in Los Angeles; while the other currently residing in Nashville, TN.
Their music publishing deals would allow them to have Grammy Award winning artist and 2023 Super Bowl halftime entertainer Rihanna, record one of their songs; and the musical journey that began in late 2009, continues on to this day.
With well over 7 million YouTube hits on their signature song; these two Hoosier grads will forever be linked to Bloomington. Their impact on campus culture while in town (and certainly after) was undeniable... we're so happy to have as our guests on this second episode of Beyond BTown: the architects and entertainers behind song, 'This Is Indiana' ...
