BENTONVILLE - Proudly the daughter of Mexican parents, she feels that they are seeing her every day, and her vocation is to help other Latinos like her to achieve higher education.

For many Latino students at NWACC, Juanita Olivares Franklin is the first face they meet, even before enrolling in community college.

BENTONVILLE – “It's an essential American story. Like all undocumented people, there were challenges, commitment, struggle, work... that's life. We started with low resources, with work and determination we opened the family business. It is the American dream that is increasingly unattainable for African Americans and Latinos. It's my story, and it's the story of hundreds of thousands of other people.”

The words of Diego Quiñones sound a bit like a text that would be placed at the beginning of an exhibition about the life of migrants in the United States. Perhaps it is no coincidence that Diego works in a cultural space, The Momentary.

FAYETTEVILLE – From Cali, the capital of Colombian salsa, through Bogotá, Arkansas, Indiana, Missouri, Canada and back to Fayetteville, Lía Uribe's life has been full of travels and a love for music.

Arts and Sciences, Professor in the Music Department, Lía is an international bassoonist. She traveled from Colombia to the United States in 1999 to the University of Arkansas to pursue his Master's Degree in Music. "Life goes around a lot,” Lia said. “I lived in Indiana and in Missouri, played in the Missouri State Symphony Orchestra and did my PhD at the University of Kansas from 2009 to 2013. I've always been a bassoonist and a bassoon teacher, and ten years later, here I am!"

SPRINGDALE – De hija de migrantes y madre soltera a graduarse con una licenciatura, luego una maestría, crear una fundación para apoyar a las mamás migrantes en el noroeste de Arkansas y convertirse en Juez de la Paz del condado de Washington, la historia de Judith Yáñez ha sido una de superación y ayuda a los demás.

Judith nació en Los Ángeles de padres migrantes originarios de Guadalajara. Llegó al noroeste de Arkansas en 1996 y se graduó de Springdale High School en 1998. “Solo hubo diez Latinos que se graduaron ese año, aquí casi no había Latinos”, recordó. “Me acuerdo que íbamos a El Potrero porque allí vendían tortillas”.

SPRINGDALE – Ser mariachi es un privilegio dentro de la comunidad Latina, uno es a la vez actor y testigo de todas las etapas de la vida con sus alegrías y tristezas, desde el baby shower, el nacimiento y el bautizo hasta el funeral. Darle sentido a todas las emociones de la vida y hacer algo por su comunidad es importante para Eduardo y Janette, quienes han apostado por la equidad de género en su grupo y por darles la oportunidad a jóvenes músicos del noroeste de Arkansas.Era su destino ser mariachis. Janette Márquez Chávez creció en Guadalajara en una familia de músicos. “Soy de Jalisco, de una familia de músicos que tocan tamborazo zacatecano.”



Antes de llegar a Arkansas, Janette vivió en Chicago, donde participó en el proyecto Mariachi Herencia para inculcar la cultura mexicana en las escuelas secundarias.



Por su parte, Eduardo Montalvo Villasana es originario de Tampico y primero llego a Texas. “Estuve en Houston pero tenía familia en Arkansas, tenía una conexión con el mariachi. Decidimos armar un mariachi en Arkansas y acomodé a todos, gente local y familia”. Los ahora esposos se conocieron en Estados Unidos, y ahora tienen dos hijos pequeños.
