Big Trends: The Early Innings of AI in Marketing (Thinks Out Loud Episode 374‪)‬ Thinks Out Loud: E-commerce and Digital Strategy

    • Marketing

You cannot escape talk of ChatGPT and large language models and AI in all its forms at the moment. The amount of ink, bits, audio, and video dedicated to the topic would make you think that it’s the biggest trend in the history of marketing. And, maybe… it is?

Maybe.

At the same time, we’re still in the early innings of AI in marketing. Yes, it’s a huge marketing trend. But, ChatGPT, for instance, was launched only 3 months ago. Microsoft unveiled “the new Bing” only three weeks ago. To claim that they’re the end-all, be-all, Alpha and Omega of digital marketing is, again, maybe just a touch premature.

Don’t misunderstand. I think AI in marketing is incredibly important. I think these tools will play a big role in how we execute our campaigns and tell our stories over time. I also think that, because we’re in the early innings, it’s far too soon to know all the ways these tools — and they are just another set of tools in our toolbox — will shape our world even a few years down the road.

Instead, we need to think about the “ships and shipwrecks” that AI in marketing will invent. We need to think of how we can get the greatest benefit, while also thinking about the downsides &mdash the shipwrecks — sure to come with our use of artificial intelligence. Most importantly, we need to think about our role and how we can use our passion, our intellect, and our humanity to create and connect… and not just turn everything over to the machines.
