Hyperemesis Gravidarum(HG) in pregnancy - Jelina’s Birth Story and Becoming a Doula

Hyperemesis Gravidarum(HG) in pregnancy - Jelina’s Birth Story and Becoming a Doula

This show contains the reality of what pregnancy can be life if you have hyperemesis gravidarum(HG) during pregnancy. This is a condition of severe nausea & vomiting and that can lead to dehydration, malnutrition and weight loss. It usually lasts through the entire pregnancy and ends once the baby is out.
Our guest today is Jelina, a doula and birth photographer. Jelina has had two births, one in a hospital and the second at home with midwives. We talk about both of her births today and include how her first one led her into birth work. And a heads up to a nurse named Lauren who inspired her to become a doula and probably doesn’t even know the impact she made at Jelina’s first birth!
Jelina also goes into self-advocacy when it comes to conditions that you may have during pregnancy. HG only affects about 3% of the pregnant population and so many people who have it are brushed off and told that it’s just morning sickness. Jelina wants you to know that there are Facebook groups out there to support and help you and that it’s ok to question your providers when your symptoms are being ignored. This is a case of the squeaky wheel gets the oil. Jelina now lives in Illinois and her website is https://jelinasonnenberg.com/ and her Boudoir photography is https://www.gildedreclamation.com/

30b: How To Be A Birth Advocate

30b: How To Be A Birth Advocate

Todays show is all about advocacy in the birth room. While this episode is the third in our World Doula Week shows, I also don’t want to limit it just to doulas because parents will be using these skills in prenatal appointments and pediatric appointments for years to come! Traci Doula is my guest today, who will also be my guest in October when I host her doula training Keeping Your Power® Advocacy in Action Workshop here in San Diego. I want to mention her 2024 trainings in Denver(May), Spokane(July), Boston & Oregon(Sept), San Diego(Oct) and Calgary in November.
Traci has been in birth work for over 25 years. Our discussion goes into detail about what advocacy is, why many doulas don’t feel comfortable with it and how lack of communication around that with parents can unintentionally be causing harm to the families we serve.
One of the reasons I wanted to host Traci’s training in San Diego is because I know first hand that when doulas have the same background in training, they communicate differently, feel more supported and stay in the work longer and stay mentally healthier. Today’s show has a lot of somethings for everyone!
You can follow @TraciDoula on IG and @TraciDoula4 on Tiktok. And for one on one mentoring or Life Coaching – her website is TraciDoula.com. Sign up and we’ll see her in October!

030: There's More To Birth Education Than Science and Anatomy

030: There's More To Birth Education Than Science and Anatomy

In our second show featuring childbirth educators, we welcome Haize Hawke. Haize is a Mother, Doula, Student Midwife, Meditation Teacher, Healer, a Life Coach and Spiritual Counselor and I am blessed to call her my soul family. This conversation is much more than regular birth education and will show you just how expanded connection between your self and your partner can be.
Haize goes deep in how she focuses on “excavating” the parent relationship while in her birth classes and also during prenatal meetings with her clients. The caretakers of this new baby do so much better when they are “Team Us.” Haize talks about how having vulnerable conversations with each other and being on the same page with ideals and standards, set the stage for how you will be running your life as a central unit from here on out. Thinking through all of life’s possibilities BEFORE your baby is born, helps you find out where you are as a couple and where you will be as a parent to your new baby.
Haize also discusses the importance of slowing down during pregnancy so you can have an easier time doing so in postpartum. We are meant to have “preggo brain” so that we take more time to relax and integrate becoming a parent and reflecting on the life we are leaving behind. There is an ancient system in place within our bodies that if we don’t override it, will only serve our highest good.
And doulas- just wait until you hear how Haize sets the intention in the room for not only her clients but for each staff member as they enter the birth room. This episode is not to be missed! You can find Haize for a consultation or Virtual Birth Coaching at HaizeHawke.com or you can DM her on IG or Facebook @IAmHaizeHawke. Tell her you found her on our podcast for a special discount!

    New Doula Mentoring Call, Georgia

    New Doula Mentoring Call, Georgia

We are back with our second World Doula Week Bonus show! This week Georgia joined me for a mentoring call and we had jokes!
Georgia took her training four years ago, attended one birth and then took a hiatus. Time got away from her and now she is back! Georgia had her passion reignited and it’s time for the next action steps.
We cover self-confidence, authenticity and the emotional hurdles that we face as doulas. We also walk through the daily practice of a positive mindset, feeling comfortable with setting boundaries and how those are truly just self-care at the end of the day. In order to avoid doula burnout, you need to know your limits and set your boundaries with intention. They get easier with practice!
We also go into life skills that we gain in doula work and how trusting your own intuition allows you to help the families you serve and be 100% present. Letting go of the attachment we have to birth outcomes and our “perceived idea of success or failure” has a simple fix that you can start practicing today. Thank you Georgia for being open with your doubts and your willingness to own the step to say yes to all that’s in front of you. Welcome back!
If you are needing more support with your mindset and daily practice – you can download my Doula Mindset Ebook and Business Meditations to build your self-confidence and help you with looking towards yourself for the answers you seek. Being solo in the birth room doesn’t have to be daunting. You have all you need inside. ($19.99)

Our Doula Education Series begins next month! We would love to have you join us!

    Mental Health For Pregnancy

    Mental Health For Pregnancy

Postpartum mental health is beginning to be recognized more in mainstream media. But what about pregnancy mental health? Did you know that signs of postpartum depression or the risks for developing it can start during pregnancy?
In today’s show I have Beth Warren, a LCSW and author who specializes in perinatal mood disorders. Last year Beth and I created an online course highlighting her book, The Pregnancy and Postpartum Mood Workbook to get families early help with what to look for in their mental health journey. I, myself suffered with pregnancy OCD but at that time no one was talking about it. It was treatable and I had no idea. Our hope with this course is that families start their preventative mental health journey early in pregnancy so they can be actively managing any symptoms that regularly get lost in our medical system. Remember there is a baby coming and now is the time to prepare and cover all your bases so you can be there 100% for them.
Our discussion covers trauma-informed care, understanding attachment styles, and the impact of birth trauma. We also address the spectrum of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, the need for early intervention, and the benefits of online therapy with a newborn.
Thinking that this mental health stuff doesn’t apply to you may be an obstacle to set aside and really explore where you are with the help of Beth and her course. You and your partner will leave with an understanding of how this may already be affecting both of you(perinatal mood disorder do not only affect the one carrying the baby) and what tools there are here to help. Getting this support before your baby joins your family will make all the difference. Beth’s workbook is included in the price of the course.

New Doula Mentoring Call, Jeanne Marie

New Doula Mentoring Call, Jeanne Marie

It’s March! And that means World Doula Week is almost here! This is the first of several Bonus episodes just for doulas that we are releasing this month.
In today’s show we have our first mentoring call. I welcome Jeanne-Marie Paynel – a doula transitioning from being a volunteer doula in a hospital program to working as a private doula. Jeanne-Marie is no stranger to working with parents, and I have referred to her for years. She has a master’s degree in Montessori education and has her own Podcast called The Art of Parenting. She offers solid birth and parenting education with her doula packages so parents are more prepared for pregnancy and parenting.
Our discussion includes our personal experiences in the birth room and how our own triggers are reflected to us as we offer support. When we become aware of why these patterns show up – we understand what healing we have to do for ourselves. Like attracts like and if we want a certain type of family to serve, we need to radiate those qualities. I want to thank her for her vulnerability and openness to sharing her doula experiences with us.
Jeanne Marie and her many offerings, including private mentoring and Parenting School can be found at VoilaMontessori.com.
