Hair Care Secrets from Colombia to Iowa
In this delightful episode of Black Hair Care No Chaser, I sit down with Lorena Alomia on her cozy porch for a heartwarming chat about her unique hair care journey from the lush rainforests of Colombia to the bustling city of Cali, and finally to Des Moines, Iowa, where she now owns the catering company Delicias by Lorena.
Join us as we reminisce about her childhood, sneaking in daily swims against her grandmother’s wishes, with her hair always giving away her aquatic adventures. Discover the natural hair care secrets she learned from her grandmother, using plants like Escobilla and Ortega, and how Manteca played a role in maintaining her long, healthy locks. Lorena also shares some fascinating stories about the local cuisine she grew up with, including armadillo, fresh fruits, Conejo, and Guatin.
As Lorena transitioned into city life and later into modeling, she began using relaxers, which ultimately changed her hair’s texture and length. Learn how she adapted to styling her own hair, despite disliking her grandmother’s traditional styles, and the impact of her modeling career on her hair health.
Don’t miss this engaging conversation filled with laughter, memories, and valuable hair care insights from a Colombian perspective. Whether you’re interested in natural hair care, Black hair politics, or just love a good story, this episode is for you! I can relate to so many of her stories that I felt like it was almost me! I had no idea somebody could have had so many similar experiences and thought processes when we totally live very different lives and are strangers.

From your White Adopted Black Girl 🥥
I’ve just listened to this program, and my white mom does my hair. She didn’t learn from your prod-cast, but had to submerge herself into YouTube. Things started off rocky when I first came here, but now my mom is amazing and can do it all! Thank you for creating another opportunity for transracial adoptive moms to respect their children hair types, and really give them the chance to feel confident in our curly crowns! 👏🏾💅🏾
Feels like I’m in your living room
Thank you for this awesome podcast—it feels like I’m in your living room just chatting (except it’s about something personal and important in my life). Also: can we see a picture of the 80s baby hair those kids made fun of? A twist out sounds cute! What was wrong with them!?
Excellent!
Thank you Kanisha for opening a window into your world. I’m hooked!
